The Oak Tree is a multi-layered story. Although the story does have a deep spiritual component about God's plan for goodness and love of others, it also deals with strength and perseverance when faced with difficulty. The religious nuances of the book, and rhyming scheme were carefully planned out. References to the bible: Zion (triumph), the oak tree and significance of names like Jacob, Joseph and Grace, make way for enriching discussions.

The message also challenges children to see the good in others from a different angle, without focusing on faults. The story helps children to understand that God is with them, and that building a relationship with Him is vital in our lives. In addition, The Oak Tree gives children new strategies to deal with bullying/teasing and abuse. Children need to know that the solution to eradicating bullying isn't as easy as one, two, three. Children need to know that there is hope, but it often takes a lot more time than a week or a month to solve.

Children need to be taught how they can persevere and overcome their suffering. The Oak Tree touches the hearts of both young and old. As humans, we can relate to loneliness, suffering and pain. It is through suffering that we really get to know God, because it is at that moment that He carries us through. By allowing ourselves to be open to God's word and "hear" only the good, we can change the way children think about themselves and others.
