Jerome is on his way to an orphanage and a new home. All of the other stuffed animals are full of excitement and joy at the possibility of belonging to a little boy or girl. Jerome is not full of excitement or joy. He is full of anxiety.
"The kids will ignore me!
They'll never adore me!
I'll end up right back on that shelf!"
Then Jerome thought with fear,
"Or they'll leave me in here
in this box in the dark by myself!"
Looking around the cardboard box as they bounce down the road, all he can see is how different he is from the other animals. First, there is Fig, a bunny with a puffball for a tail and ears that stand up. She is so cute! Jerome hates his own ears that just wobble and flop. Then there is Taj, the giraffe who is tall with a neck that is long and graceful. Jerome is short and his neck seems to have disappeared. Why can't he be like everyone else?
'The truck followed curves and hit bumps,
and made swerves, which kept shifting around
all the creatures. He fretted and frowned,
and kept looking around at his
animal peers and their features."
As Jerome gets closer to the orphanage, he meets Pierre who is plain brown just like him. There is one difference though. Jerome has a big beautiful smile. Through it all, Jerome learns that being different is what makes him so special.
