This book is multi-faceted. It is a delightful children's story; is is accurate natural history; it deals with fire lookouts, which are an interesting part of our history and are in some areas now being designated as national historical landmarks. And perhaps most of all, the artwork, also by Judy Hatch, is a delight to all ages and an inspiration to chhildren to try the same technique of drawing with just dots.

This book will become a children's classic, much in the tradition of Make Way For Ducklings, which also has black and white drawings and is the story of animals' life cycle and their interaction with humans.
