This series looks at a variety of subjects and follows their progression and development during the 20th century. In this book, the author gives an overview of the changes in agriculture throughout this century. Rickard discusses the gradual shift from manpower to machines at the turn of the century, the decline in farming after the First World War and the effects of the Wall Street Crash on agriculture in the 1930s. He describes the devastation in farmland during the 1940s by the Second World War and how farmers were called on to boost their production to feed the armies and civilians. The following decade saw farming gradually turned into an industry as science and technology began to take over on the farm. Later chapters examine the introduction of new farming techniques such as hydroponic cultivation, cloning and irradiation, as well as farming and the environment, organic farming and a return to traditional methods. The work concludes with the agricultural problems facing the developing world. Graham Rickard is the author of a variety of books including "The Great Press Barons" and "Spacecrafts".
