In the words and pictures of Hawaii's children, this unique book is a living history of our islands. To achieve it, we asked our children to paint or write about their Hawaii, what they understood about how Hawaii came to be. The children's response was overwhelming, a torrent of more than six thousand images and stories drawn with enthusiasm and love by children ranging in age from kindergarten to the eighth grade. What they wrote about and painted they did with the total involvement that is so joyously part of childhood. There was real magic in the enthusiastic telling of their tales, a reaching out to touch other times and other generations. Out of their explorations, their insights and wholehearted involvement has come a tender story in book form. In this storybook, our children have given us, their parents, mentors and peers, an insight into the islands we live on that is filled with understanding, freshness, and love.
