Having been issued a Regular Army pony by the name of Fannie Lee, Gilbert saw action on several battlefields wherein he was cited for his skills and bravery. When President Andrew Johnson made special compenation offers to him, Gilbert opted to receive his faithful Fannie Lee instead.
