Should Hannah return to her cruel owners?

Hannah stared at the woman in amazement. Unless she had misunderstood, she and #151;a slave girl and #151;had just been invited to tea by the mistress of a fine house! "I'm afraid I'd better be getting back," she refused reluctantly. "When my mistress gets up from her afternoon nap, she will expect me to be there, starting supper."

One of ten children of the head cook at Riceland Plantation, eleven-year-old Hannah is sold as a slave to a kind Georgia family to help care for their expected baby. But when the mother and child die in childbirth, Hannah is sold to a cruel tavern owner who beats her often. She would have been unable to endure had it not been for the kindess of Miss Rachel, the lonely lady next door.

When her mistress insists that she become a thief, Hannah runs away. On her escape route, she encounters a revival meeting where she finds her former owner, Alex DuVane, who leads her to Christ.

Since runaway slaves can be put to death if caught, Hannah knows she must return to her cruel owners, the Westons.
