Will Stark was preparing to fight when the armistice was signed. He never reached the front. Instead, he returned to a broken society struggling to make sense of defeat-a civilization in decline, an environment in ruins. After receiving a call from a stranger who has news about George Stark, the father he never knew, Will drives to a distant suburb to see what, if anything, he can learn about his past. As Will pieces together his father's life from the scraps George left behind, he also pieces together a new life for himself, an active role in the life of the community. And when the community finds itself at odds with its leaders, he becomes a soldier again, fighting a battle of futile gestures and lost causes that may or may not be his true calling.
