This book explores the experience of living and dying with a life threatening, incurable disease. The author spent nine years gathering data largely from unconscious symbolic expressions that appeared in 322 drawings by 68 patients, ages 5 to 30. The plan for conducting this descriptive study was based on a Jungian model for collecting and evaluating drawings, developed by analyst Susan Bach. The author focused on a cystic fibrosis population and gives an overview of what she learned from these patients. Representative drawings reveal remarkable findings such as developments prior to their clinical confirmation, apparent influence of a near-death experience, forecast of lifes span, and an array of archetypal images that amplify the struggle between life and death. The reader will find in the book practical application of the Jungian-Bach method of using drawings to decipher physical and psychological experiences.
