Basia used to be afraid of spiders; while researching them for DANCES WITH DOGS... she learned to like them. She has had dogs since age six and trained every one, including Shandy, Amber, Gunter, and Smochek, her present fox terrier, teaching them to twirl, crawl, back up,yawn and sneeze on command, pray, and open and close doors. She has published short stories, including "Best Friends Are No Urban Legend" in GIRLS' LIFE MAGAZINE and "Happy Wigilia" in MY FRIEND MAGAZINE, under the name Barbara Kent Belroy. "Happy Wigilia" also appeared in CELEBRATE THE SEASON, published by Pauline Books. She loves MG and YA fiction. Her favorites are TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD; WALK TWO MOONS; BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE; anything by Sarah Dessen; and THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES. She lives in California with her husband, Alex, and their dog,Smochek. She has a twin niece named Sandra Jane. Basia is a full-time professor at Cerritos College. Previously she taught kindergarten and sixth grade.
