I trained as a librarian and have worked in children's literature and as a children's librarian, usually in bi-lingual schools, for over twenty-five years. I am a native of northern California, and have lived and worked in London, Kampala, Istanbul, Curitiba, São Paulo, and Paris, where I now live.

I very firmly believe that we are a part of, not outside of, nature. We are born with bodies constructed along the same lines as those of other mammals and with similar needs, and we die in the same way as other creatures. We are governed by nature's laws, the surest events in our lives: the sun always rises and sets, the moon always waxes and wanes, the seasons of the year follow on one another in the same order always.

Learning about nature is an integral part of our early years and continues throughout our lives as we try to understand its cycles and their effects. The beauty and unending variation of nature make the learning exciting and fun. Humanity's ferocious destruction of nature makes the learning urgent. Nature, in some way or other, is present in all of my children's books.
