Hood Hood Books was founded in 1995. Our primary aim is to present stories from the rich and diverse cultures of the Islamic and Eastern civilisations. Children of today need heroes from their own backgrounds whose timeless qualities may inspire them and give them a sense of pride and self-confidence. Young people need to be made aware that Islam possesses men and women whose examples can be followed and emulated. At the same time it is essential to spread a message of tolerance and understanding between faiths. Indeed the books are aimed at children from all religions and ethnic backgrounds, especially in the western world where there is a desire to read and learn about Islamic civilisations in an objective and educational manner. This twin aim of teaching both Muslims and non-Muslims around the world about the richness and diversity of Islamic civilisations will help tremendously in bridging the cultural gap that exists between the Islamic and western worlds, while creating an invaluable library for children to collect and treasure. We publish books in distinctive series, focusing on different subjects and age groups; from the biographies of heroes and heroines to history and religious education, and from art and architecture to the love of travel and adventure. The age groups covered vary from 2 to 18 years, and we have indicated with each title a general age guideline and school curricula guidelines for the UK and US. Please use these simply as an indicative measure. After all, each child progresses at his or her own pace and many parents / teachers may choose to read certain stories well before the child is capable of reading them on his or her own. Also many of our readers use English as a second language. With beautiful full colour illustrations throughout, excellent writing, original artwork and design, these are books that will not only educate and entertain - they are books to be treasured. Why the Name Hood Hood? One day King Solomon was inspecting his troops when, to his surprise and anger, he discovered that one of his birds, the 'Hood Hood' - or Hoopoe - was not in his usual place. Shortly afterwards the Hood Hood arrived out of breath with important news for his king. He had discovered a kingdom called the 'Kingdom of Sheba', ruled over by a powerful queen. In that kingdom, the Hood Hood declared, the people worshipped the sun instead of God. King Solomon listened carefully and then instructed that a letter be written urging the Queen of Sheba to worship God. He then turned to the Hood Hood and, giving him the letter, instructed him to take it to the Queen. From that day on, the Hood Hood has been considered a blessed bird and the bearer of knowledge and glad tidings.
