Description:
The Case of the Disappearing Frogs - What Children Can Do to Help
Research scientist Elizabeth W. Davidson has devoted the last several years to uncovering the reasons why populations of amphibians are declining worldwide. "The numbers of some species have dropped 40% or more," says Dr. Davidson. "Sadly, some have become extinct during our lifetime, and others are poised to follow unless we act quickly." When she began tutoring second and third grade students she was delighted to see how aware of the environment these young people are." It was this experience with these kids that led me to write Cheery: The true adventures of a Chiricahua Leopard Frog," she explains.
Through Cheery, children will learn of his amazing transformation from egg to tadpole to frog. But all is not well in Cheery's pond. The Leopard Frogs are disappearing. One night, Cheery and some other frogs are snatched from the pond and spirited away in a truck.
At daylight, they discover they've been taken to a zoo where the caretakers are going to feed and protect them until the pond can be made safe again. Humans, it seems, had added bullfrogs and crayfish and other non-native species to the pond, and brought in a lethal frog disease. The Leopard Frogs had suffered as a result.
Complete with notes and lesson guides for parents and teachers, Cheery: The true adventures of a Chiricahua Leopard Frog will help children grasp the problems facing so many animals today and they can learn what they and others can do to help.

"Amphibians around the world are getting sick and dying, including the Chiricahua Leopard Frogs in Arizona. Elizabeth Davidson is one of many research scientists working to solve the problem. In Cheery: True Adventures of a Chiricahua Leopard Frog, she tells young readers about that important work through the eyes of one little frog. Michael Hagelberg's colorful, exquisitely rendered illustrations bring her words to life. This book is a "must have" for anyone who loves animals and cares about the health of our small blue planet."
