Tom Leonard has worked as a free-lance illustrator for over twenty-five years. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art, (now called the University of the Arts). After moving to New York he worked for publications such as Psychology Today, Science Digest, PC magazine, USAir Magazine, and Readers Digest.In New York he acquired representation from Kirchoff-Wohlberg, who introduced him to the world of children's books and school publishing. He has worked for Time-Life, McGraw-Hill, Macmillan, Scholastic, Scott-Foresman and Nickolodean.
Since 1993 he has focused on children's books with a view toward nature. His work combines a folk-art sophistication with a scientifically realistic interpretation.
He has illustrated books for Hyperion, Golden, Harper-Collins and Web of Life Children's Books.
He lives in Philadelphia and has taught illustration at the University of the Arts for the past five years.
He regularly goes to schools to discuss his work.
His work has appeared in the Graphis Annual and the Society of Illustrators.
He lives in the Italian Market section of Philadelphia with his lovely wife, Rose (also an artist) and their cat, Maroef, who so far has exhibited no artistic talent.
He is looking forward to the release in September of his next book, Here is Antarctica, written by Madeleine Dunphy for Web of Life Children's Books.
He continues to be represented by Kirchoff-Wohlberg.
He looks forward to one day writing and illustrating his own book.
