Thimble Press

In 1969 Aidan & Nancy Chambers started the Thimble Press in order to publish the journal Signal Approaches to Children's Books. Signal appeared three times a year, unsupported by state/institutional subsidy or commercial advertising, and had contributors and subscribers the world over. Each issue collected articles about some of the many aspects of children's literature: writing and illustrating, educational theory and practice, literary criticism and reviewing; bibliography, biography and personal memoirs; editing and publishing and bookselling; translating and translations and international cultural events; bookmaking and book collecting; social and literary history. The final volume of Signal, combining the January, May and September 2003 issues, was published in September 2003 - click here for details. A stocklist of back issues in print is available - click here. See also http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~angl/signal/annotations.html. For fuller content details than are presented on the UK site, please visit - http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~angl/signal/index2.html Our thanks to Claas Kazzer for establishing this site in 1997 and maintaining it since then. From 1980 to 2001 the Signal Poetry Award articles in each May issue of Signal highlighted current poetry published for children. Please visit http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~angl/signal/poetryaward.html for poetry award winners and selectors. Other poetry articles in Signal are referenced in The Signal Companion. (see Stocklist) New poetry awards. For details of the new UK poetry award please see the website of the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (www.clpe.co.uk). In the US The Lion and the Unicorn (Johns Hopkins University Press) will be making its first award for children's poetry in 2005. For details please contact Lissa Paul (lpaul@unb.ca) Since 1975 the writing in Signal has led to separate publications.
