I am a writer and editor, and I have been writing children's books and articles for nearly twenty years. I’ve always loved writing. When I was in grade five, several friends and I started a writing club. We’d gather with our most recent poems and stories and read them aloud to one another. We always tried to say one thing that was positive, along with a more critical but constructive comment. Also, because I was so crazy about horses, my good friend, Barb, and I began writing and “publishing” a magazine about horses and horse-back riding. We sold “The Saddle and Bridle Club” magazine to our friends for 5 cents an issue!

After finishing high school, I studied English literature at Queen’s University and then the University of Toronto. Before my final year of university, I was fortunate to get a summer job working for a children’s publishing company, Crabtree. There, along with other students, I wrote, researched, proofread, and edited manuscripts – and loved it. I learned so much! Upon gradation, I worked for a year with Crabtree and then began a career as a freelancer, which she continues to this day.

Now I do lots of editing work, mainly for educational publishers, but my true love is writing fiction and non-fiction for the educational and trade markets. I have written many books for Scholastic’s literacy series. Scholastic is the publisher of my WILD PAWS chapter book series, and my non-fiction book about young people’s volunteering, RAISE YOUR VOICE. I have also written two books in the CANADA CLOSE UP series. I really enjoy doing the research for these books. I get to learn so many new things!

I live in Toronto in a tall house with a red door. I work at home in my living room, sitting on the couch with my laptop in front of me. When the weather is warm, I open the windows wide and sit where I can see the trees and enjoy the sunlight. One of the favourite parts of my day is when my kids come home after school and I get to visit with them and hear about their day.
