Even though I won my first writing award at age 11, I didn't realize people had careers in writing until much later. I wrote anyways - letters, lists, poems, the occasional journal entry - but I think my love of reading is what really prepared me to be a writer. I would hide books under my blankets at night and read them from the light in the hallway whenever I could.

I still read at night because writing takes up a goodly chunk of my days. The beauty of writing is that I can be working on a story wherever, whenever... although getting it on paper can be a challenge sometimes.
"Wherever, whenever" proved itself true when a bedtime story became my first published picture book, the award-winning When Pigs Fly (Lobster Press, 2001).
Before writing, I earned two bachelors degrees (Linguistics and Theology) and a CERTESL certificate. My other job choices have included bridal consultant, seamstress, small business owner, retail fabric sales, homemaker and mother. In 2005 I moved into art, too, with the intention of illustrating some of my own stories someday. I have since exhibited both locally and internationally and have been privileged to earn a variety of awards and honors for my artwork.
After 30+ years of life on the Canadian prairies where I was born and raised, I now write from my home in southern Oregon (or wherever). Along with picture books (my first love), I also write non-fiction articles for both print and on-line magazines, poems, tech writing, web content and I do freelance editing when I need a break from my own words.
