W. Val Chambers is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (Ph.D., 1972) and has taught high school and college but got into elementary school teaching almost by accident. On a study tour of Israel studying archaeology and Palestinian geography he discovered Herbert Kohl's 36 Children, a book about a Harvard philosophy graduate teaching thirty-six children in Harlem, New York. When he taught a class of eleven- and twelve-year- olds in western Jamaica for a year he wrote One Year Is Not Enough, a book about the experience.

Later he wrote and published books for primary school children. He discovered that books that taught to the test sold better than books that are based on proven research into how children learn.

Chambers hopes to show that children can be taught to write using sophisticated constructions since the best writing is done by copying others. He has recently published Global Elementary School which includes material that could only come from reading in many fields.
