I’ve been working as a freelance illustrator since leaving Uni years ago, and so far haven’t had to get a real job! As well as illustrating other people’s stories, I have written as well as illustrated four picture books as well as a series of information and activity books on different Asian countries, and a junior novel. I now spend about half my time writing and the other half drawing, as well as running workshops on writing, illustration and Asian cultures in schools, and tutoring adults in writing and illustrating for children.
I am Australian, and have lived in various places around Australia, as well as Singapore and Malaysia and travelled widely throughout South East Asia and the Indian sub-continent, developing a keen interest in the cultures, folklore and folk art of the region, which has been a huge influence on my life and work.
I also illustrate for Advertising Agencies, Design Studios and Government Departments. Probably my most exciting commission ever was a large illustration I did for the Singapore Zoo, which has been used as a mural in the Zoo shop, and also for packaging and merchandising, buses and all sorts of other things! I also did a similar illustration for the Singapore Night Safari, which will be used in the same way.
Much of my recent work has been influenced by living and travelling in Asia, and I hope through my work to provide a way of bridging cultural boundaries, and to foster greater understanding between people from different cultures and backgrounds.
I also makes lino-prints, and in 2006 received a High Commendation in the prestigious Waterhouse Natural History Art prize, for a print titled Tree of Life, was a finalist last year with a print called Elemental. This year again received a High Commendation with a large drawing called Daintree.
