After retiring from teaching special education, I wrote my bucket list and writing for children was at the top. Now, I have found it's hard to move down the list. I have a love for animals,especially horses and dogs, and the subject of my story just presented itself. After researching service dogs, I began my middle -grade, coming-of-age novel, Puppy Raiser. It involves an eleven year old girl that is challenged by a troubled, new girl that boards her horse at the same barn and her trails of training a puppy to be a service dog. I have volunteered in a local chapter of PAALS ( Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services) with the hope that more dogs can be trained and given to people with special needs. My first contract for a magazine article, due out in July, 2010, is about a child who has received a diabetic alert dog. I have started the search for interested publishers, or agents, and have completed the second novel of the series, Dog Days of Summer.
