About Nicole
I graduated from Michigan State University in 1990 with a degree in telecommunications. I specialized in broadcast journalism, and I produced a television news show for the local PBS station while I was a student.
After I graduated, I joined the US Peace Corps. I taught English as a Second Language for two years in Rwanda, Africa (1991-1993). I continued to travel around the world for about two years after that.
In 1997, I went back to school to study writing at Syracuse University, and I earned an MFA in Creative Writing after their 3-year intensive program. This is where I began teaching writing, as well as publishing creative nonfiction in literary journals. I worked with some incredible writers, like the satirist George Saunders, the feminist writer Mary Caponegro and the experimental fiction writer Diane Williams.
I have been teaching college-level writing courses for nine years now, and I have become an active freelance writer, publishing 70+ articles in newspapers and magazines. In addition, I have won numerous grants and awards, including the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico's Artist in Residence Grant.
I am currently working on a chapter book series for girls who love science, and I am looking for publishers. This is my first book, and I am hoping it will be my breakout piece because I'm interested in growing my writing career.
