I got an early start on adventure when I was 8 years old and my family traveled around the world on prop planes through 17 Asian and European nations on the way to and from living in Rangoon, Burma. By the age of 10 I’d ridden on elephants, seen the Taj Mahal by moonlight, picked my way through the ruins of the Parthenon and walked in a deserted sandstone city. Those experiences still color my books, my paintings, my sculptures, my illustrations and my outlook on life.

I write for all ages—4 pictures books, and 5 illustrated novels with a 6th, In the Company of Whispers, to be released in September of 2008. I love writing, illustrating, type setting and designing books. When kids ask me which of my books is my favorite, I always say the next one because what drives to me to write, or do art, or illustrate is the act of creation. When they ask me where I get my ideas, I can only say it’s from an overly active imagination.

I love working with kids and mentor ongoing young writers groups for teens and younger kids. I appear regularly at seminars, books festivals and in schools; exhibit my paintings and stone sculptures; and write articles about book publishing and children’s literature.
