About Kim
Kim Weissenborn grew up in Chatham, New Jersey with her parents, her sister, her brother and many animals. Kim began drawing at an early age. She was fascinated with color and the people around her. Painfully shy, Kim spent most of her time alone creating pies out of mud and decorating imaginative homes for her barbies. At age 16 Kim seriously considered art as a career after excelling in a private watercolor class. She attended Parsons School of Design in Manhattan and received her BA in Fine Arts. Upon graduating, Kim began illustrating book covers, and children’s books. Kim continued to paint in watercolor. Her love of the face and figure inspired many commissions for portraiture. Kim married Ney Lopez and moved to Arizona. In Scottsdale she opened a gallery in the civic center. Combining her love for illustration and watercolor, Kim has just illustrated another children’s book called “Pansy at the Palace” available at Neiman Marcus, Gumps, Bergdorf’ Goodman and Amazon. ”Watercolor has a mind of it’s own. There are times that this medium does things I would never consider. The lack of control is thrilling to me. Presently I am focusing on the figure and how beautifully it fits into a rectangular composition. My ideal subject is a person that is long limbed and mentally intense. My oldest son fits that description. I use him often for inspiration. The unpredictability of Watercolor helps me to let go of literal interpretation and push boundaries.” Kim lives in Vero Beach Florida with her husband and three sons where she teaches art to adults and children at the Vero Beach Museum.
