Glen Downey is a graphic novelist, children's author, consultant, and award-winning educator living in Oakville, Ontario. He has written nearly sixty books for young people that focus specifically on literacy development and inquiry-based learning. As a graphic novelist, Glen’s books have been illustrated by a variety of notable artists, including Mike Rooth, Jeremy Bennison, Glenn Brucker, Leo Lingas, and Francesco Francavilla. He has written for several different series for Rubicon Publishing, including Boldprint, Timeline, and The 10. His books have been distributed by Harcourt, Nelson, Scholastic Canada, Scholastic US, Steck-Vaughn, and Oxford University Press.Glen is currently the Literacy Coordinator for Appleby College, an independent school in Oakville, and was formerly its English Department Chair (2002-2008) and Writer in Virtual Residence (2007-2008). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Victoria in 1998 for his work on the History and Theory of Games in Literature and Culture, and previously earned both his B.A. (1991) and M.A. (1992) from McMaster University. In 2001, he graduated with a B.Ed. from the University of Western Ontario, receiving a Faculty Association Scholarship as the top graduating student. Before coming to Appleby College in 2001, Glen taught in the English Department at UBC, and was awarded the Ian Fairclough Prize for Teaching in 2000. In addition, he taught in the English Departments at the University of Victoria and McMaster during the course of his graduate studies. Glen has several academic publications, including The Fifty Fatal Flaws of Essay Writing (Althouse Press, 2002), a book that identifies common grammatical, logical, stylistic, and aesthetic errors that appear in student writing, and shows how to correct or avoid them. Glen has also presented papers at a number of international conferences, including those at Harvard, NYU, James Madison University, Texas Tech, CSU—Long Beach, and the University of Saskatchewan. He has been a member of several scholarly societies, and has reviewed scholarly articles for academic conferences and publications. As well, he appears in the PBS Telecourse, English Composition: Writing for an Audience. The series features educators, authors, journalists, television and film personalities, and other professionals who collectively introduce principles and techniques of effective writing as part of a broader discussion about the importance of being able to communicate with specific types of audiences.
