All Carrie Hartman wanted to do as a child was to draw and color. Even still today one of her favorite smells is a box of Crayola crayons. Growing up in the tiny town of Watford City, in western North Dakota, Carrie could be found drawing Mickey Mouse, Charlie Brown, Garfield and others from the Sunday comic pages and watching endless amounts of animated cartoons (by the way she still loves watching cartoons!) Working for Walt Disney became her ultimate goal. She didn’t end up pursuing an animation career but has been heavily influenced by it. Carrie considers herself an actress with a pencil. She loves to put motion and life into her characters and for you to really believe they are thinking and feeling. She attributes this to being influenced by one of her favorites, animator Chuck Jones.

Carrie graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. She is now a part of the faculty at MCAD, teaching in the Illustration program. Carrie’s illustration work includes: children’s books, editorial work in newspapers and magazines, animated commercials, games, greeting cards, advertising, maps, and murals. Carrie’s work has been seen in New York Magazine, The Baltimore Sun, The Hartford Courant, Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, The Rake, Midwest Living, Threads, Chicago Gro Magazine and New York Dog Magazine. Some of her other clients include: HGTV, Sterling Publishing, National Center for Youth Issues, American Greetings, ING, 5th Avenue Financial, American Red Cross, Minnesota State Fair, Encyclopedia Britannica, CTC Publishing, Multnomah Publishers, Darakwon Publishing along with many others.

Carrie’s illustration work has received many national awards. Her most recent honor is for a book she illustrated and designed for CTC Publishing, My Mouth Is A Volcano. This book received the 2006 top award from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP), for the best illustrated and designed children’s book for the educational market. Carrie has also received many awards from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, silver and merit awards from Portfolios.com, and an Educational Press Association Award nomination for her illustration work on the animated game VoteQuest.

Carrie loves working on children’s books. They allow her to magically step into another world for a while. She has many stories floating in her head that are just waiting to be brought to life. Carrie lives and works in Woodbury, Minnesota. She has one wonderful husband, Craig, two beautiful little girls, Sophia and Abigail, one little boy, Jack, and one terribly naughty beagle, Winnie.
