Children’s Book Press is the only nonprofit, independent press in the country focused on publishing first voice literature for children by and about people from the Latino, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American communities. We promote the lived and shared experiences of cultures who have been historically under-represented or misrepresented in children’s literature while also focusing on promoting inter-cultural and cross-cultural awareness for children of all backgrounds.

When Harriet Rohmer founded Children's Book Press in 1975 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, she established the country’s first publisher to focus exclusively on quality multicultural and bilingual literature for children. Children's Book Press originally presented folktales and legends based on the oral traditions of indigenous peoples from across the Americas, and soon expanded to include stories set in the contemporary United States, poetry collections, and multicultural anthologies. Harriet's commitment to multicultural and bilingual children’s literature, and to fostering emerging authors and artists, forever changed the children’s publishing landscape. Today, Children's Book Press publishes contemporary stories from the Latino, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, and multiracial communities. Our books have gone on to win numerous awards, including the prestigious Ezra Jack Keats Award, the Coretta Scott King Award and Pura Belpré Award.
