Bonnie Chrstensen grew up in upstate New York and the Appalachian Mountains. She graduated from University of Vermont 1973.

After college she worked at the New York Shakespeare Festival, (Delacorte in the Park, Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center, Public Theatre) Chelsea Theatre at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Actors’ Studio, Stella Adler Studio in New York.

Author-illustrator of WOODY GUTHRIE: POET OF THE PEOPLE, a BOSTON GLOBE-HORN BOOK Honor Book, and a NEW YORK TIME Notable Book. Author-illustrator of DJANGO, WORLD'S GREATEST JAZZ GUITARIST, winner of the ALA's 2010 Schneider Family Award. Illustrator of THE GRAPES OF WRATH for the Folio Society in London and fifteen books for child including POMPEII, LOST AND FOUND by Mary Pope Osborne. Fine art prints have been exhibited internationally, many in conjunction with artist residencies. Member of the Society of Illustrators and SCBWI.
