I am a proud product of the Detroit Public Schools. After college I worked at a bank but that was not my cup of tea, gin, or milk so I left there and became an educator. A girlfriend and I began writing stories and became storytellers hoping that we could later get those stories published. Our stories were fantastic adventures about beautiful Black children. I also began looking for books for my children that reflected an image that looked like them. There were not that many books like that out there and I wanted to know why. And while on that search to find out about the history of Black children's literature I decided to go to grad school. My husband packed me and our three children up and we moved to Iowa. . . . Iowa City that is. . . field of dreams and plenty fields of corn. Now an associate professor in the field of children's literature I know a lot about Black children's literature AND children's literature. My children now are grown (and semi-grown) and I want to return to my first dream which is to write children's books while continuing to research and write about the wonderful world of children's literature.
