Hi! Thanks for visiting my profile. I am the author of 27 published books for children, teens and adults. I started out writing for adults and had two novels published (in 1982 and 1983), using a pen name. In 1989 I switched to writing for youger readers. Now I write picture books, middle grade novels, YA novels, and occasionally a non-fiction book.My most famous picture book is THE LOTUS SEED, the story of a Vietnamese woman that starts when she is a child in Vietnam and ends when she is an old woman in America. It won lots of awards and is a Reading Rainbow Book. My most recent picture book is THE BUFFALO SOLDIER, a look at the history of the courageous black soldiers who served in the US Army from 1866 to 1945.My middle grade novels include two of the Dear America Series books (A LINE IN THE SAND and VALLEY OF THE MOON), THE SILENT STORM, and others.I also love to write YA novels about many different subjects including history, gangs, wars, American Indians, Vietnamese, and contemporary issues.
