Orel Protopopescu is an award-winning poet and children's book author. Her most recent picture book, Thelonious Mouse (FSG, 2011), edited by Wesley Adams and illustrated by Anne Wilsdorf, was chosen as the 2012 Crystal Kite winner for the New York region by her fellow authors and illustrators in SCBWI. Two Sticks (also illustrated by Anne Wilsdorf) appeared on FSG's spring, 2007 list and was honored by Bank Street’s College of Education as one of the best children’s books of the year. Orel's love of music is also evident in her chapbook of poems, What Remains (Finishing Line Press, 2011) which contains the poem chosen as Oberon Poetry Magazine’s 2010 first-prize winner, “Listening to My Favorite Things from The Best of John Coltrane.”

Currently, Orel is collaborating with an illustrator (Jeanne de Sainte Marie) and producer (Actialuna) based in Paris, France, on an animated, interactive poetry app for the iPad, A Word’s A Bird, which she looks forward to sharing with the children in her poetry workshops.
