Currently a busy freelance copywriter, I strive to complete my young adult novel set in communist Dresden, Germany in the two decades leading up to the fall of the wall. Völkerball (italics) is told by a young woman who recounts her early enchantment with the idea of "growing up to join the People's Army" as it morphs into disillusionment. Her "coming of age" mirrors the state's own "coming out" of its false utopia. Daria learns firsthand of the lies, spies, distrust, crimes, and environmental disasters that mark the GDR (German Democratic Republic) in its final decades. After a heart-stopping escape scene just days before the fall of the GDR, the novel ends in New York City where 18-year-old Daria speaks before the UN about her homeland.

This YA work of historical fiction is painstakingly researched to provide a glimpse into life as a young person in the GDR--a time and place that few Americans know or understand.
