I spent nearly 20 years of my working life as a newsman -- mostly in South Florida at the late Miami News -- and 20 more as a freelance writer and editor. I've written on everything from alligators to UFOs, and edited manuscripts for everyone from budding novelists to scientists.

I gave Florida a good try, but in nearly 40 years I never learned to love the heat and humidity. So when my new wife suggested a that we get the hell out, we moved about as far as way as we could and still stay in the continental United States. We are now living in Washington state with two cats, assorted deer, squirrels, raccoons and birds.
