Next to teaching, and writing, one of my enjoyable activities has been working in children's theater. One of my earliest criteria was simply to have every child on stage, preferably with a speaking part, so you can imagine how expansive our stories were. In my own writing, I have written a libretto for a children's opera, featuring the piano of the great Thelonious Monk. A second libretto features the revolutions of a light table beneath an open skylight reflecting and moderating the antics of Jettature, the evil eye.
My concentration now is writing stories for picture books. I find it quite a challenge. Someone told me I have too much dialogue, but then I am tuned to diction and dialect, so who knows. I have written two novels, one was published as a serial in our local newspaper.
Self-employment is about to end! My husband and I developed a rural preservation subdivision on our property, preserving almost 70% open land, including a lovely little creek. We are environmentalists, yes. I collect books about bears, but I do not write about bears. Other writers do that wonderfully well.
