Blessings

by Ronald Wallace

occur.
Some days I find myself
putting my foot in
the same stream twice;
leading a horse to water
and making him drink.
I have a clue.
I can see the forest
for the trees.

All around me people
are making silk purses
out of sows’ ears,
getting blood from turnips,
building Rome in a day.
There’s a business
like show business.
There’s something new
under the sun.

Some days misery
no longer loves company;
it puts itself out of its.
There’s rest for the weary.
There’s turning back.
There are guarantees.
I can be serious.
I can mean that.
You can quite
put your finger on it.

Some days I know
I am long for this world.
I can go home again.
And when I go
I can
take it with me.

This poem, shared a few weeks ago on The Writer's Almanac, cracks me up. Ronald Wallace turns all of these common sayings upside down and inside out, changing them from negative to positive.

It's all in how you look at the world, isn't it? Change your lens, change the world.

Now do me a favor and go back to the title and the first line. Do you know which saying he flipped? I'm thinking "occur" was originally "happens." And are you thinking what I'm thinking about the word he changed into "blessings?"

Cracks. Me. Up. Every time.

3. Gratitude Sets the Tone for a Positive Day

Last week I chatted about living a life of gratitude and journal writing. I hope you have taken the time out to do such each and every day! The positive benefits on your life are immense!

Today, I'd like to touch a bit on what I'm grateful for...

My husband... Tom - we've been together 29 years and of course we have hit our bumps in the road, but we always manage to circle back around and be there for each other.

My daughters... Nicole and Hayley - my girls fill me with pride and awe every day of their lives. Whether it be their steadfast focus on their individual goals or overcoming adversity in their lives they inspire me daily!

My family... no matter what obstacles have been thrown my way, my family... immediate and extended are always my loudest cheerleaders.

My girlfriends.... My mantra to my daughters is to hold on tight to your girlfriends for they are the ones who will always be there at a drop of a hat in your good and bad times, no questions asked. A great big shout out to (in alpha order)... Cynthia, Dawn, Lynn, Mary, Maureen, Michelle, Theresa and last but not least... of course my twin sister, Debbie!

Crittin' Chicks Critique Group... I big shout out goes to Karin and Marilyn.... without their expert and thorough critiques of my works-in-progress I would not be where I am today! Ladies enjoy the holiday season festivities and see you January 2015 as we recommence our critique sessions!

Wishing you all a daily life of gratitude.

I'll be offline through the new year enjoying the magic of the season and being present in each and every moment.

Cheers!

5. what does "best of" mean? how does it change us?

A few days ago, Lynn Rosen, the editorial director of the Publishing Business Group, wrote to ask me about those end-of year lists we see so often in the book business.  What are they?  What do they mean?  How are they created?  How do they affect us?  She asked, and I (with my always limited knowledge) answered. Our conversation is here.

This morning, while I was waiting for an unexpected visitor to leave the house (okay, so it was the pest control guy, and, all right, if you must know, I was not precisely prepared for the visit, and since you won't stop asking, no, my hair was not combed and my eyes were raccooned), I was scrolling through my blog log and saw that my good friend Danielle Smith of There's a Book had written something about pausing.  I need pause right now, I thought, and so pressed on the link, only to discover that Danielle had included me in her glorious post.  You'll see what I mean, here.

Oh my gosh, new insertion.  Here is Sarah Laurence being uber kind to Small Damages at year's end.

So how do I feel about being included in some of these phenomenal lists, mentions, citations, possibilities?  I feel blessed, pure and simple.  I feel outrageously lucky.  I have been writing books for a long time.  I have published many.  I was an outsider from the get-go, but I don't feel so outside anymore.  I feel like I am part of a community.  I feel like there is reason to go on searching for stories and words.

I want to write.

9. The true meaning of Christmas

Christmas time can be a wonderful opportunity to give with love. The commercialism of Christmas is a shame. I must admit I love giving pressies to those I love - I get a real buzz out of it, but this year I have decided to share the giving a bit further. A few opportunities have come my way and given me the opportunity to bless others and this in itself is a blessing to me. Today a friend emailed me a link and I would like to share it with you as i feel it is a wonderful way for anyone to experience Christmas with more love.

After watching the video on www.adventconspiracy.org I quickly realized the importance of fresh water. As noted in the video, the fact that lack of fresh water kills more people than anything is something to pay attention to. When you consider that $450 Billion was spent in America last year on Christmas gifts and an estimated 10 billion is what it would take to supply clean water to everyone. If I was to spend $450 on gifts at Christmas, then only $10 would be enough to make a difference. Image if we all did it???

Quoting the website: www.adventconspiracy.com “ $10 will give a child clean water for LIFE!”

If we spent more on personalising our gift giving with time, handmade gifts or acts of live, we could use at least some of the money saved on helping the poorest people on earth. At the same time we are restoring or building the close relationships we have.

We often take for granted what others depend on for survival – CLEAN WATER.

The donations are handled by Living Water International and I have also offered an oil painting as a draw prize for anyone who contributes to this fundraiser via my page. http://www.firstgiving.com/kayleenwest The winner will be announced publicly on my blog once the fundraising page time has expired. I will also note anyone contributing as a Thank you.

Gift Certificate for Christmas Donations

I encourage everyone to watch the short video and visit my fundraising page. Where you will find a link to download a Christmas certificate I created, should you wish to bless someone with a gift of love on their behalf.

11. ...hello...? Is anybody there?!

Do you remember me?! Haha...what happened to summer?! It seems like only yesterday it was May...

My daughter is visiting this week before starting her senior year at JMU. To refresh your memories, she is getting her BFA (graphic design and print-making). She adores print-making and is so good at it. She wants to be an illustrator, too. Next summer she is hoping to intern at the Crusade for Christ Headquarters in Orlando, FL (CRU). I'm excited because it gives me an excuse to visit :)

Most of the summer I've been a stand-in creative editor for Showcase Magazine while the real CE is on maternity leave. This has given me a chance to do something different...a much needed shot-in-the-arm for creativity, imagination and deadlines that make your adreneline pump - and pump. And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with children's illustration. And you know what? I love the magazine and hopefully they will keep me on to assist the CE...but I miss illustrating. The hectic pace of the magazine has left time for little else but it's almost done :)

The illustration above is for Illustration Friday...Detach. I did this as part of the mini-book card for my daughters 21st birthday in June. Detached, in some ways, is how I feel. You watch your kids grow into adults and detach in their own ways...detached for 6 weeks from artwork and my blog...

The good thing about the word "detached" is knowing I can "detach" from the detached feeling and move forward! I am so excited for my daughter and son this coming year...and also for me, too! I've got my copy of Dreamweaver and Painter X and several goals...one biggie is that I will hopefully have my Cintque by Christmas :) and first I thank God for it all.

She becomes a brat! Then, something arrives

<><><><><><><><>

and the
GREAT NEWS!

Guardian Angel Publishing and Kevin Scott Collier
are going from strength-to-strength.

CEO, Lynda S. Burch, is publishing books that are getting all
the right attention in all the right places.

How do I know this? Because I am lucky enough to be one of their authors
- "Rattlesnake Jam" is my 7th children's book.

Lynda encourages her authors and illustrators to get together and
brainstorm promotional ideas for their books, and help each other find
success. She is also pretty good at thinking up new and out-of-the-box
ideas for us herself!!

When a group of writers and illustrators who are passionate about

children's books, join together with a publisher who is equally
dedicated, wonderful books, for kids of all ages, are written and
published. G.A.P is definitely a publisher parents can trust.

And Kevin Scott Collier was there with
Lynda at the beginning of G.A.P.

Kevin recently won awards for his quirky and delightful illustrations.
Now he tops that, by being invited to star in a new children's television
program to be produced by
KICKS Club TV Org.

This will debut on major Christian broadcast networks in early 2009.
ABC
Family also has the option to pick it up. It will be syndicated in
Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Tentatively titled "Drawing for Kicks."
it will be an instructional program for kids in
illustration, and will
feature my books and art. Shooting begins at Studio 85 in Sunbury,
Ohio,
this fall.

I am thrilled to share these
Blessings, Thanks and Great News items
with all of you.
