2. Geneseo Bear Miniature

This is my sculpture of the 'Geneseo Bear"  9 inches high.
He is in for repairs as he jumped off a shelf.  He is ok, just the street light is off kilter.

The Bronze Bear
The Bronze Bear Fountain is on Main Street, Geneseo, New York

Just off campus, in the center of Main Street in Geneseo sits the famous Bronze Bear statue. "The Bear"
also plays host to any number of spontaneous decorations and pranks throughout the academic year. A
story also circulates that one of the wealthy Wadsworth daughters saw the bear fountain in a small town in
Germany, fell in love with it, bought it, and sent it back to Geneseo in the early 19th century. This story is
unverified, but an excerpt from a history of the family that settled the valley implies that this is not true,
and that the fountain was designed and built for its current location: "[Main Street] is still dominated by a
drinking fountain for horses dedicated to Mrs. Emmeline Austin Wadsworth. For some obscure reason its
designer placed a short pole in its center on top of which sits a cunning little iron bear, who is generally
known as 'Aunt Emmeline'.

3. It feels so good to paint again!

I've been so busy with the house and the move that making art for fun has been a distant memory. If you're still reading this blog, you're probably wondering where the art has gone. I hope to share more with you soon.

Today I went to a friend's baby shower. She had asked me for a painting for the baby's room. Of course, I left it until the last minute. It didn't help that my studio looks like this.

Instead of delaying it to a more perfect time, I cleared off a corner of my drawing board and a spot on the floor in front of it. I felt so blocked, but I took Kelly Rae Robert's advice and pretended like I was in the mood. I had no plan for this painting at any point. I had no idea what it would look like or be about until I was almost finished. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!! As a color pencil artist I always have a plan and it takes a long time to complete it, so just winging it is heaven. I was grinning from ear to ear while I painted. I was joyful. I really think that shows in the painting.

My friend loves it and she loves dragonflies (as do I). She also told me that dragonflies are dream keepers. Spooky. I had no idea.

4. Illustration Friday: muddy

Living in Topanga I know a lot about mud because here we live in the dirt. I am sad to report that more people are moving in and pouring a fair amount of concrete to make it less dirty! It always makes me wonder why a person would want to live in a rustic State Park when they could easily live in Calabasas which is much more paved and upscale. Have you noticed that I talk a bit more when I really don't have anything for the word and I don't have time to make anything either :(
This image has a little to do with mud, muddy and Topanga because this doggy plate that I made for my mom about 15 years ago is made with Topanga mud in a little garage clay studio belonging to Jan Mitchell right down the lane. Good clean mud! We taught children, we had girl's Monday Night Clay where we played, talked and laughed. My submission for Illustration Friday's " muddy" theme is a painted clay plate "Happy Day" I made for my mom Babs who has not been feeling well. I love you Mom!

5. New media

Still hard at work on my book. It is going much slower than I like, but the pages I have done I really like and am very happy with them.

I couldn't find a good cradle with any reference so I went out and bought some clay. I only needed a little but the smallest box was 10 pounds. So now I have about 9 3/4 lbs of clay left!

Above is my reference for my nature baby in his cradle. I didn't sculpt the face, and the clay needs to dry beor I can paint it. But now I have reference so I can push forward with more book drawings. Baby is in about a third of all images including the cover!

Wish me luck and creative flowing productive energy, the deadline looms!!! LOL

Ta!

7. Illustration Friday: hollow

My submission for Illustration Friday's "hollow" is not an illustration but rather a clay pot that is comprised of 4 clay slabs that make 4 separate buildings and a hollow interior. It really isn't hollow but filled with the sky and stars. This vase is owned by a longtime collector of my art and I only made a few of them as they are large and can break and indeed one broke during an earthquake and one got broken that was in transit. Considering all the time and work it left me with a hollow feeling :(

15. Illustration Friday: clique

I used to belong to a clique of women that would get together every Monday night for years, we would make and glaze pottery. It was way more of a social gathering than anything and I could even walk to the clay studio, but we did create a lot of wonderful things too. For me, making and painting pottery is one more way I can satisfy my love of houses and buildings but it can be a frustrating creative pursuit. The firing process doesn't always provide the desired outcome. You can spend as much time painting clay as a real painting and end up with nothing. I don't appreciate that aspect of clay but when it does come out beautifully you know why people love it. I really enjoyed these get togethers with all the women, some from Topanga and some from other parts of LA. We even had a few celebrity guests such as Lisa Bonet and Patty Smyth. Most of the ladies were long time friends and we would laugh, tell stories, listen to music, eat food and candy and paint our pots and plates.

My submission for Illustration Friday's " clique" theme. There are cliques going on in these buildings :)

17. Illustration Friday: theory

Thank you to everyone that watched the "Home" video and to all the wonderful people that left such nice comments, it means so much to me and David Tobocman! I really love the song a lot because it is so hearfelt. If you missed it you can catch it at the bottom of this post. Today for Illustration Friday's "theory" my submission reflects that according to the theory of Chinese Feng Shui, there are 8 types of auspicious houses that can give people solid financial status, harmonious family relationships, good public relationships and happy marriage status. Tea house and cup made from clay and glazes.
