The Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has published a movie tie-in edition of the book and lyrics for the musical, Into the Woods.
Famed composer Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and stage director James Lapine created the book. This new edition will feature eight pages of full-color photographs from the film adaptation which stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, and Johnny Depp. Follow this link to watch the trailer.

A new trailer has been unleashed for The Giver film adaptation. The video embedded above heavily features Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, who plays the Chief Elder.
Many book fans lamented that the first trailer did not appear in black and white. In response, a featurette starring author Lois Lowry, was released; it showcases black and white glimpses with Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges in the title role and Brenton Thwaites playing the lead protagonist Jonas. The great actress Meryl Streep will narrate the first ever audiobook edition of Heartburn, a novel by the late Nora Ephron.
Random House Audio will release the audiobook in July 2013 as “a digital download exclusive.” Streep and Ephron were friends, and Streep starred in an adaptation of Heartburn in 1986. Here’s more from the release:
Additionally Random House Audio will be releasing digital download exclusives of Ephron’s magazine articles and essay collections, Wallflower at the Orgy, Crazy Salad and Scribble Scribble. Casting for the narrators of these three titles, also available in summer 2013, is underway. Heartburn is Ephron’s sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage.

Actress Kate Winslet has inked a book deal with Simon & Schuster to publish The Golden Hat, a collection of photos of celebrities wearing a special hat to promote autism awareness.
Winslet (featured in The Reader trailer embedded above) has arranged many celebrity appearances, including: Anna Wintour, Kevin Bacon, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law. Creative Artists Agency negotiated the deal with publisher Jonathan Karp, and senior editor Kerri Kolen. The book will come out in November 2011.
Here’s more about the book: “Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another … Winslet found inspiration for this project in her friends Margret Dagmar Ericsdottir and Ericsdottir’s son Keli, who lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism … Despite hardship, Keli now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry. One of the poems, among the many included in the book, is called ‘The Golden Hat,’ which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.”

So you may have already heard that there’s going to be a Higglety Pigglety Pop! short film as a bonus feature on the Where the Wild Things Are Blu-Ray, which is coming out March 2. Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life is of course the other major chidren’s book by Maurice Sendak. It’s a surreal story about a dog looking for Experience.
The film is semi-animated (there are puppets involved) by the filmmakers of Madame Tutli-Putli and includes the voice-acting of Meryl Streep (Jennie), Forest Whitaker (Lion), Spike Jonze (Plant). The production design – as in Tutli Putli - is rich and stunning. Streep is perfect as usual.

The First Book blog team recently took a field trip to see Wes Anderson’s film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book, Fantastic Mr. Fox. Read the team’s thoughts below as they share their likes, dislikes and opinions on how the film compares to the book.
Nisha: While the filmmakers may have doctored the foxes’ family dynamics a bit, Ash and Kirstofferson were the perfect charmingly blunt pair of troublemakers to keep audiences engaged. The book reflected a slightly different story, with four fox cubs and a far more shameless means of putting food on the table. In the book, Mrs. Fox places requests for supper, which Mr. Fox proudly obliges by stealing from one of the three farmers. The movie did however stay true to the spirit of Roald Dahl’s witty and imaginative world, including many direct quotes from the book itself. Told in Dahl’s characteristically windswept fashion, viewers are dragged along for the ride of a lifetime (literally) as the animals fight to outsmart farmers Bean, Bunce and Boggis.
Aesah: I loved it—and was pleasantly surprised that I did. The filmmakers kept the spirit of the original work when they expanded the story but also managed to sneak their own quirky brand of humor into the film. I had my doubts about an entire movie done in stop-motion animation, especially in this age of CGI and big special effects, but it was actually the perfect medium; the jerky motions adding to the story’s overall quirkiness and the simplicity of the settings giving it a hint of nostalgia. Wes Anderson’s masterful hand turned it into just another layer of the story. George Clooney and Jason Schwartzman were perfect choices to voice the Fantastic Mr. Fox and his son Ash, respectively. It has something for everyone and I will definitely be adding this movie to my collection.
Bonnie: With the opening scene playing the song “Davy Crockett – King of the Wild Frontier” – I knew I’d love this movie! Wes Anderson is known as a less than typical director, which fits with a Roald Dahl story perfectly. I especially enjoyed the choice to use stop-motion, and like Aesah stated with most movies are now using big special effects I was a bit wary but this difference in animation made the film visually interesting and it is still able to move along in a fashion that adds to the charm of the story. Wes Anderson’s first animated film is a goodie and I recommend it for kids and adults alike.
Katie: All in all, I was delighted with the film version of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. I’d give director Wes Anderson three cheers for the vocal casting, soundtrack and the seamless additions of new characters. The casting of George Clooney and Meryl Streep as Mr. and Mrs. Fox was spot on, and it was fun to pick out recognizable voices including Jason Schwartzman as Ash and Owen Wilson in a cameo as Coach Skip. The film’s soundtrack added a rich background that complemented the visual animation. With artists as varied as the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and Burl Ives, this soundtrack includes something that just about everyone will like. Finally, I loved some of the charming characters – Kylie the opossum being my favorite – that were added in the film version. They brought a dash of whimsy that was a perfect foil to highlight the original characters from Roald Dahl’s story.

For example, did you know that Sophie Kinsella’s THE UNDOMESTIC GODDESS is “in development” or that there are rumors that Meryl Streep is set to star in DEWEY?

Man, these look amazing. They totally capture the self-serving attitude of Jennie–all wrapped up in an adorable package. That wagging tail is perfect!
I don't really think there's a minor children's book by Sendak, but there are more than a few that people regard as major works besides Higglety Pigglety Pop!, including 1970's In The Night Kitchen, along with books that Sendak did with Ruth Krauss, Janice May Udry and others.

You know, I hated the “Where the Wild Things Are” movie so much I'm afraid to even look at this.
Mr. Jonze sucked all the fun and life and wild rumpus out of the story and replaced it with a lot of depressing baggage from his own, presumably, unhappy childhood. More like “Where the Pathetic, Suicidal, Manic-Depressive Things Are.”
i also thought “Where the Wild Things Are” was a disappointment, i was expecting it to be good. but i still liked the visual, this one looks pretty nice too, i like the cat. nothing all that original but better than a cheesy modern look.
