Joy the Jellyfish has a very serious problem. More than anything, he wants to make friends. But how on earth can he make friends when he's nearly invisible!
He tries to get the attention of the other Great Barrier Reef creatures--Amy Anemone, a school of sea horses, Gantian the Great White Shark, Bogart the Blowfish, Daphne the Dolphin--but because of his near-invisible nature, he's mostly ignored.
"My only wish is to have a friend," says Joy the Jellyfish. Then, as he keeps traveling deeper into the ocean, and the waters become icier and darker, he meets Bella Beluga the Whale, who teaches him the secret of friendship and how friendship itself has nothing to do with his nearly-invisible physical nature. Thanks to Bella, Joy learns how to overcome shyness and make friends. More confident, he swims back to the reef, this time powered with the knowledge of true friendship.
Joy the Jellyfish is a sweet story about friendship and about how to overcome shyness in order to make friends. The prose and dialogue are engaging and the brightly colored illustrations captivating. This is a book that will make a fine, delightful gift to any child, not only because of its beautiful artwork and engaging plot, but also because it teaches the different animals which inhabit the great barrier reefs. This book is the second collaboration between talented illustrator Kevin Scott Scollier and his author wife, Kristen. I hope this book will not be their last and I certainly look forward to more children's picture books from this winning team.

Every little girl plays dress up in her mother's clothes and imagines that she would be as beautiful as her mother if she were tall enough or old enough. Of particular interest in Mom's closet, of course, are the party clothes and accessories - hats, jewelry, scarves, belts and shows. Mama's Saris, written by Pooja Makhijani and illustrated by Elena Gomez, warmly tells this rite-of-passage story from a young Indian girl's perspective.
Instead of in the closet, the Mama of this story keeps her treasured special clothing in a suitcase under the bed, carefully and lovingly folded. It is the little girl's 7th birthday and Mama is preparing to dress for the party. As the little girl helps her Mama choose the sari for today's special event, she begs and pleads to wear a sari herself. The vibrant jewel tones of the saris themselves are set against other dense patterns in the backgrounds of the bedroom wall, a photo frame and bedspread. The wonderful array of patterns emphasize the importance and beauty of special occasions when you change from your ordinary self (in this case a blue shirt and jumper) to your beautiful, festive self. For many children, this book will be their first introduction to clothing and family tradition from another culture than their own.
At heart, it is a retelling of a story that children will find familiar - most having experienced some variation of it in their own homes. Taking a familiar story to a broader canvas is one of the great joys that a picture book can provide. Mama's Saris is terrific reminder to all of us of the universality of our life experiences no matter where we live.

“A long time ago, before the Holy Bible was written, there was a place upon this earth known as Doubt. This prehistoric place was before the dawn of civilization, and only two creatures were known to live there; a boy named Jezubah, and a dragon named Diligence.”
Thus starts this 22-page Christian fable ebook, which is divided into three chapters: The Beginning, The Questions, and The New Pathway.
In spite of their closeness, Jezubah and Diligence are very different. Jezubah is never curious about anything, while Diligence is always asking questions. Because of their different natures, they’re worlds apart even though they’re friends. The dragon, feeling misunderstood and having no one to share his questions with, always feels alone. But he always cares and provides for the boy.
One night, huddled by the warmth of a campfire, Diligence wonders where the rocks, the mountain, himself and everything else comes from. The boy is driven out of his wits: “You drive me nuts!” the lad would shout. “Why do you question everything? What is here is simply here!”
Then winter comes and Diligence goes to a mountain top where a mysterious tree grows. With a blast of his nostrils, he sets the tree on fire, and it’s not too much later when he starts asking himself where fire comes from. To his astonishment, a mysterious voice responds, a voice that’s not exactly spoken language but one that deeply touches his heart and answers all his questions. Where does this voice come from? Will Jezubah believe Diligence’s story? If so, how will he react?
Diligence the Dragon is a thoughtful story for children, I would say, between 5 and 9 years old. It is the type of story an adult should read to children in order to help them understand its symbols and message. It is the sort of book which invites young minds to think about the meaning and history of Christianity. In spite of the colorful illustrations, the tone is quiet and serious. In this sense, it is not a light, fun book, but this doesn’t mean it is not one that can’t be enjoyed by children before going to bed, provided an adult is there to explain or clarify the hidden messages. Another factor in making this book appear ‘serious’ is that there’s a lot of text in comparison to the amount of illustrations—only three. More artwork would have definitely added a brighter atmosphere to the story.

Journeys of Hope is a delightful picture ebook that includes five fables: Hope from Above, Follow the Star, Hermit without a Home, War and Peace, and Eye of the Beholder. The star of these fables is a very cute angel fish named Hope.
But Hope is no ordinary angel fish. For one thing, she has wings instead of fins. In fable number one, she also carries with her a special secret. The problem is, not everybody in the ocean believes her. They see her astounding story as a fantastic tale. Nonetheless, Hope doesn’t give up and continues spreading the word that she believes to be true, that “There’s brightness above the surface of the ocean.” Then one day, she learns that there’s a cold creature living at the bottom in total darkness. Filled with courage, Hope swims to the bottom to tell her story of the brightness above to the dark creature. Will the creature believe her miracle story?
In fable number two, Hope learns that there’s a cave at the far west end of the ocean that leads to a pond called Salvation. The problem is, it is extremely dark out there. However, soon a miracle happens: each time Hope says the word “Faith”, the Starfish who inhabits the cave glows brilliantly. Will Hope reach Salvation now that she has discovered the secret into finding it?
In fable number three, there happens to be a large Hermit crab living in a great barren trench at the bottom of the ocean. The crab has no friends and lives by himself, embittered by his own loneliness. Will Hope be able to befriend the crab and open his heart to the miracle of friendship?
In fable number four, Hope finds a great area of twisted metal wreckage at the bottom of the ocean. She wonders what it is and where it comes from. Learning that the wreckage comes from war, Hope has one big question in her mind: Why are there wars? Egan, an elderly electric eel, is more than happy to answer her questions. He also makes her realize that there are no winners in war, and that the only way one could really be a winner is by following the road of faith and goodness.
In the last fable Hope is as invited by her friend Mabel the Manatee to be a guest at a beauty pageant. To Hope’s surprise, Mabel tells her she is one of the contestants and, what’s more, she’s even sure she’s going to win in spite of being overweight. Hope wants to be encouraging, but how can she when all the other creatures are more sleek and graceful than Mabel? Soon the other fish begin to snicker and call Mabel names. But what do you think happens when the judge—a manatee!—shows up? A lovely fable about how beauty is not only within us, but in the eye of the beholder as well.
Though this is a book that early readers can read on their own, I would recommend an adult to read it to children the first time, if only to make the Christian messages and symbols in the story clear to young minds. Collier’s signature illustrations are as always bright and colorful and a real treat to the eye. The prose and dialogue are engaging. This is a book the whole family can enjoy and one that invites children to ponder and ask questions. It is also the kind of book that teaches without preaching. Recommended for young Christian readers.

How long have you been writing and illustrating?A: I have been drawing since I was 5, and always dabbled in little fiction stories recreationally, but I didn't become published and in the business until 2004.
Your YA novel, [email protected], was recipient of the Graig’s Choice Award for Best Book in 2005 and has been referred to as a “masterpiece of communication”. Please tell us a bit about this book. What was your inspiration for it?A: "
[email protected]" was a little story I wrote for fun for a niece. When I was mailing a printout of the story to her, I bumped into a children's book publisher at the post office. The two men were in Michigan on business (from Indiana) and I told them about my story concerning an angel who emails a boy on earth. They requested a copy, they met with me again two days later, and contracted me to expand the short fable into a book. The way the story came about was actually a joke I told my niece. She asked me if I pray, and I told her no, that I email God instead. One thing led to another, but the final story is more serious than whimsical.
You seem to be extremely prolific with your illustrations. What are your working habits? Do you have any ‘crazy artist’ quirks?A: I essentially draw every evening, and pieces of several book projects all at once. So I juggle things by nature but daily push out product. Perhaps the biggest myth-buster is that I have a huge drawing desk and fancy tools to draw with. Not true. I use white typing paper, Flalir pens, and use a clipboard as my desk. I draw 80% of my books sitting on the living room carpet.
What type of illustrations do you enjoy working on the most?A: Whimsical images, animals who resemble humans, etc. I like to draw characters and develop their appearances. The more adorable the image, the better.
You made the headlines with Topsy Turvy Land when it was chosen one of the 50 favorite books of all time. How does that make you feel—having your book right next to Dr. Seuss’, The Wind in the Willows and Charlotte’s Web?A: I actually overlooked it and brushed it off until my agent and others pestered me as to its importance to promote in my resume. I drew the entire book in 3 evenings after my day job, so it was very short project. I see now that the honor is indeed something significant. I guess I should stop and smell the roses on occasion.
How would you compare the creative process of an author vs. that of an artist?A: The two are totally different. One is text, the other literally visual in nature. I can say art is easier than writing, it's just as time consuming, but more relaxed. I do like being an artist a tad more than being a writer, because everyone claims to be a writer, but few people are actually artists.
Are you familiar with Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way? Do you think illustrating has a healing, channeling quality?A: Yes I do. Tender and gentle illustrations convey love. Illustrators say a lot with their pictures, sometimes more than the words of the story they are drawing.
You seem to work on many projects at the same time. Do you follow a disciplined schedule to cope with all the work?A: Yes, get something drawn every day, and move things and projects on their way. It's a constant process of starting and ending and beginning it all again. Coping with it usually has to do with the subjects I am drawing. It's hard to feel overwhelmed of discouraged when you are drawing a rabbit with a necktie. lol
I understand your work is represented by The Hartline Literary Agency. Was it easy for you to find an agent? What advice would you give to beginner illustrators who are in search of one?A: Hartline approached me, so I never looked for an agent. It is great to have one. Advice? Send off CDs of your artwork, inquire, be personable. If you work and work ethic is good, you'll secure jobs.

Ouch! As I sit here with my crispy fried shoulders....I am thinking maybe this is a book I should have in my library!
