The hundreds of parents in First Five Permian Basin’s Parents as Teachers program are learning to be their child’s first teacher. They’re excited for the challenge. Topics like counting, shapes and colors are at the top of the list of concepts to teach their kids.
“Our parents may ask how to teach a certain concept like colors or counting, and we love to incorporate books into the process,” explains Beth Meyerson, Director of First Five Permian Basin.
But this story allowed parents to teach their children much more than these basic concepts. In addition to the benefits of reading aloud to young child, it offered a fun way to model healthy eating and living.
The book shows a family of hungry 10 bunnies and a mother rabbit who has nothing to fill her soup pot. One by one, the bunnies go to the garden. They find vegetables and fruits of various colors and numbers to fill the pot, all accompanied by beautiful illustrations that would entice any hungry young reader. At the end of the story, the family sits down to enjoy a big, healthy pot of vegetable soup.
“Children are making neural connections when they are so young, so what they learn in the first five years of their life is going to imprint with them,” explains Beth. “Whatever message they’re hearing or seeing from their parents is going to plant inside them as a young child. So, if a child has exposure to how wonderful carrots and broccoli are, it’s going to become a part of their ongoing life.”
The Healthy Kids Collection features several books that teach basic concepts while highlighting healthy living and eating. If you work with children in need, you can access these books through the First Book Marketplace.
Today’s guest blogger Donna Marquardt, a Registered Nurse with the Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services, talks about healthy habits for the new school year.
Back to School is just around the corner and that can mean a lot of different things to different people — a new classroom, new friends, new books. To me, a nurse at a local health department, it means educating kids on how to be healthy.
Healthy kids are less likely to miss days of school due to illness and better-equipped to learn throughout the school year. By engaging in simple healthy practices, like hand washing and eating healthy meals, and vaccinations, kids stay well, in school and learning.

Vaccinations are a big focus for our health department this year. They’re never fun, no matter your age, but are incredibly important. Thanks to a truckload of books we received from First Book this spring, we are excited to offer an incentive to kids receiving immunizations that will also help them be successful readers: a free book to take home!
Approximately 400 children will be receiving a brand new book at one of our major immunization events. Since kids who do well in school are more likely to live healthy lives, we are thrilled to promote literacy and make getting shots a little more pleasant.
It’s important to teach children healthy habits starting at an early age. And books can help kids learn those lessons in a fun way. Check out these great books that teach kids about healthy living, found on the First Book Marketplace:
It’s time for a routine check-up with Dr. Gert Grizzly. Sister Bear is brave about her booster shot, and Brother Bear is fine, but—achoo!—is that Papa Bear sneezing? A light-hearted approach to the subject with straightforward information.
With the help of the staff and equipment at a Seussian spa, the Cat in the Hat explains the basics of healthy living, from eating right and getting enough exercise and sleep, to having a positive body image, to the distance and speed of a typical sneeze!
Germs are all around us every day – in the air, in food, on everything we touch. You can’t see them without a microscope, but they are there. Some germs are harmless, but viruses and bacteria can make you sick. Your body is constantly working to ward off germs, sometimes the germs win, and you get a cold or infection.
We hope you’ll help spread the word about the importance of starting the school year both well and well educated about simple healthy habits. Best wishes for a safe and healthy school year!

The first thing that hits your field of vision when surfing on to the Toto/Washlet site, http://www.cleanishappy.com/, is the row of bare buttocks with smileys drawn accross, which slowly evolves into the happy faces of three males and females. A mouse click on the first female on the left informs surfers - and toilet seat aficionados - all about a special washlet. Not just any washlet mind you but one that is neither a bidet or a fancy toilet and in the words of the manufacturer: "a pretty remarkable toilet seat."
Oh? This bares further investigation.
According to Ms Washlet 101, who relates all the information, the device is easily installed, on any toilet and uses pure clean water that uses and a "bunch of nifty technology."
Again, oh? One ponders the usage and definition of 'nifty technology.' Perhaps - just perhaps - it doubles as an entertainment centre or something similar. Then again, 'nifty technology' could also be extended to frying an egg or even a mobile device. Nifty is a tricky word!
Our host, Ms Washlet 101 goes on to relate that the way it works is simplicity personified. First-time users sit down and do what they came to do (quaint but succinct) and reach for the remote.
Oh? A remote?
Next the user selects the area to be washed presumably after the person does what they came to do, and with the push of the button, the washlet does the rest. A small wand located below the seat extends, and a gentle stream of warm water cleans you.
Oh happy days!
Nothing touches the user but water and the wand cleans itself automatically.
Is there no end to this modern marvel of technology?
Go figure that all of this is offered in what - your humble toilet seat! And most of us assume a toilet seat was strictly the means to an end.
Just little change of pace here. I've been getting more magazine work than ever before this year, and right now am working on a four page piece for the new Highlights magazine, High Five. I can't share any of the sketches/illustrations until the magazine comes out this November (the month of my birthday, a very nice present indeed!). Anyways, I love to watch movies while I work. Even if the movie has nothing to do with the subject I'm working on, it still inspires me. I guess the beauty of cinematography makes me view my books from a more cinematic point of view. Sometimes when I'm thinking of a scene I have to illustrate, I'll actually take an imaginary camera in my mind and move it around at all angles to find the best one. An illustrator can learn a lot about composition and timing from a quality film. Anyways, one movie that I just can't seem to stop watching is "Casino Royale". The lead actor, Daniel Craig is absolutely brilliant and just perfect for the part. I'm glad too, because there were some mindless fools bashing the poor fella when it was revealed that he would be the new Bond. Well, I guess he showed them, and then some! I can't get enough of the soundtrack tune "You Know My Name" either. It's written and performed by Chris Cornell from Soundgarden:

Yeah, I love the theme song from this flick too! Daniel Craig did a great job in the part. I have to admit, I wouldn't have been disappointed if Gerard Butler had been given the opportunity. hubba hubba. ;o) Still Craig was great. Can't wait til the next one comes out.

Hmmm who is this Gerard Butler, Rozzie?;0) I'm going to have to do a little google image search to check him out. He can't possibly be more handsome than Craig.
Yeah I can't wait for the 2nd movie. With that and Harry potter book/movie coming out in the months to come I'm going to be a very happy camper!
(Just loved the new bond film - the best of the lot for me. I'm so glad he showed the narrow-mindd critics the door with the fab job he did too.)

James Bond movies are the kind of movies that no matter where it's at in the film, I'll stop and watch.
This movie was sooo good! I got to go see it with a bunch of guys...it was great! So far, I've liked every movie I have seen Daniel Craig in. Easy on the eyes...probably has NOTHING to do with it. ;)
