1. Lady Renegades Blog Tour: Rachel Hawkins on Funny YA

Rachel Hawkins is a long-time favorite of mine. Her books feel so funny and fresh, and her current Rebel Belle series features a girl who suddenly discovers supernatural powers that allow her to be a kickass guardian–but who was also raised to be a genteel southern belle. To complicate things further, the person she’s supposed to protect is her cute nemesis-turned-boyfriend David, who’s gone on the run and won’t let her protect him. What’s a girl to do? And will the aunts pack enough cookies for her road trip to find him? To celebrate the release of the last book of the series, we’re pleased to welcome Rachel Hawkins to blog today as part of the Lady Renegades tour! She’s here to talk about humor in young adult books, which came about in a roundabout way from a tweet from Rachel that sparked a conversation about why funny YA can... Read more »

2. Best Young Adult Beach Reads with Lori Goldstein, Author of BECOMING JINN

Lori Goldstein | The Children’s Book Review | July 16, 2015 I grew up on the Jersey Shore and now live outside of Boston, where on the right day, I can smell the sea from my back deck (though it still takes an hour to get to the beach). Maybe that’s why the beach is my happy place. For […]

3. School Spirits - Review

Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Category: Young Adult Fiction/Fantasy

Synopsis:

Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Kimberly's Review:

Izzy Brannick is strong and trained to fight monsters. And the one thing she is scared of? High School.

Izzy has been homes schooled her whole life. So when a case requires her to go to high school, Izzy bunkers down, watches a lot of high school television and hopes for the best. But nothing could prepare her for a best friend, a crush and a ghost. A really strong ghost.

Can Izzy's new friends accept who she is and help her defeat this ghost?

I'm a big fan of the Hex Hall series so I was really excited to read School Spirits. Izzy appears in the last book Spell Bound, and she takes front and center in School Spirits. Izzy is smart, strong and achingly awkward. I love how she's never been to a high school pep rally, basketball game. I love how she's learning everything there is to know about high school by watching television. The story introduces us to some "normal" teenagers like her new best friend Romy who is equal parts awesome fun and rainbow unicorn. And sweet Dex who makes Izzy a little bit dizzy.

In typical Hawkins fashion, there's a lot of fun one liners and witty dialogue. There's some romance, and ghosts and witches and danger. But best of all, there is Izzy who is really sweet and a bit sad.

The story moves quickly and while I would have liked more description, more twists, stronger motivations for the characters, I still breezed through it quickly in only two days. Enjoying the ride and wishing there was a sequel I could dive into right away.

It's a standalone after the Hex Hall series, but you should read the series first to fully enjoy School Spirits. I really hope this is the start of a spin off series.

*I received this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This, in no way, affected my opinion or review of this book.

4. Spell Bound

Spell Bound Rachel Hawkins

This is the third and final installment in the Hex Hall series. It opens with some big revelations-- Sophie's mom is actually a Brannick and many of the attacks by the Brannicks and the Eye have actually been the Casnoffs, trying to rule the Prodigium.

But when everyone gets magicked back to Hex Hall so the Casnoffs can perfect their evil plan, that's when things really start to heat up.

There was a little too much Sophie/Archer/Cal love triangle for me because (1) I never fully bought into the possible viability of Sophie and Cal as a romantic relationship. Too much chemistry with Archer. and (2) Ugh. Love triangle. Over it.

But, I continue to LOVE Sophie. Her voice is as hilarious and whip-smart as ever. I admire her strength in the face of fear and evil. Elodie continues to amuse and amaze and big bad final showdown lays everything on the line.

I also loved the running joke between the friends over who was the hero and who was the sidekick. (I mean, Jenna does have the angstier/more tragic backstory and Sophie does do all of the sarcastic wise-cracking, so I think Jenna does make a strong case for herself.)

On one hand, I'm glad that Hawkins knew when to wrap the series up and she does it well, on the other hand... I WANT MORE SOPHIE PLEASE.

5. Cover Art Revealed: Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3) by Rachel Hawkins

On Wednesday, Rachel Hawkins revealed the cover art for the third and final book in the Hex Hall trilogy, Spell Bound. Check it out:

Coming March 13, 2012!

I love how this cover combines elements from the first two, and how consistent they are throughout the series (even down to the random cat...). Also, fierce sword there, Soph! o_O As Rachel Hawkins pointed out in her reveal post, Sophie's also wearing a Hecate Hell uniform in the reflected image...does that mean she returns to the school that started it all before the series ends? I hope so! We've come full circle =)

The books in this trilogy just keep getting better, so the conclusion is sure to be killer! I am DYING to get my hands on it after the cliffhangery torture of Demonglass.

Here are the other two covers for comparison:

What do you think? Which Hex Hall cover is your favorite? I think mine is still Demonglass.

6. Demonglass: A Hex Hall Novel

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch. Turns out she is a demon, one of only two in the world, the other being her father. After finding out she is a demon and finding out the boy she was crushing on was an agent for The Eye-a group trying to wipe out all Prodigum, she decides to have her powers removed, a very dangerous procedure that will leave her with marks all over her body. Her father picks her up at Hex Hall and takes her to London for the summer, hoping to persuade her from following through with the Removal. But when she gets to the London countryside she discovers two more demons! What does this mean? How were they made? To read more of my review, click here.

7. Demonglass

Demonglass (A Hex Hall Novel)Demonglass Rachel Hawkins

So, I *loved* Hex Hall. Luckily, Demonglass didn't disappoint!

Sophie has decided to go through the Removal. She can't handle the risks of turning out like her great-grandmother. Before her father will allow it, she has to agree to spend the summer with him at Council headquarters in England.

So, with Jenna and Cal in tow, Sophie's off to England where she learns that the Council is in deep trouble-- the Eye and the Council are at war. Someone's raising demons they can't control. And well... Archer's in England and has a habit of popping up at inconvenient times. Plus, Sophie has to take lessons from her father to learn to control her powers.

As the politics and twists get bigger and more sinister, the stakes and danger get higher.

It has all the wit and humor, as well as the sexual tension of the first, but with a lot more suspense. I still love Sophie's voice and I loved discovering that she gets her sarcasm from her father. I liked how their relationship grows over the book as they learn to trust each other. I also really liked the intrigue of the shifting politics and alliances as the war progresses.

AND! I like that it proves my suspicion that I'm down with paranormal as long as it's not angst-ridden.

And the surprise revelations!!! HELLO!!!!

Now, this is the second book in a trilogy, and the seconds in trilogy's always end at a !!!!!??!!!!! moment (Catching Fire and The Empire Strikes Back, I'm looking at you! It's hard to leave a story right when you discover that the Seam doesn't exist anymore, or with Han frozen* and given to Boba Fett and Luke discovering that Vader is HIS FATHER!) And yes, this ending is the same. AIY! And we have to wait at least a year to see how it all ends!!!!

So, in case you couldn't tell by all the exclamation points and random Star Wars tangents, I loved the book.  It was more awesome than the first one and I cannot wait until the third comes out.

*Ok, this is totally unrelated to ANYTHING besides my undying love for Han Solo. But check out all these cool things you can get of Han frozen in carbonite. I want the Lego.

ARC Provided by... publisher at ALA midwinter, because I squealed when I saw it.

8. Waiting on Wednesday (2011-2)

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's highly-anticipated novel is Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins. It's a sequel, so read the description below at your own risk if you haven't read Hex Hall yet. SPOILERS AHEAD!

From goodreads.com
Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.

That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

It took me a while to get into Hex Hall, but I'm really looking forward to the sequel. The whole boarding school for the paranormally talented is old hat, but Rachel Hawkins makes it so fun to read, I completely dismiss the cliché.

Class dismissed!

9. Bookanistas - Hex Hall and Demonglass

First I'll talk about Rachel herself. Adorable, Hilarious, So fun. I met her a couple years ago online just before she sold her books to Hyperion. She is honestly one of the funniest people I've ever met right up there with Lindsey Leavitt. So as you can imagine I love hanging out with both or either of them. I only hope they think i'm half as funny as them. :) In addition to this series, Rachel has another one coming out in next year or two, Rebel Belle, which sounds awesome.

I read Hex Hall last year and loved it. But I never blogged about it? I know crazy right? So when I saw Rachel this past weekend, she gave me an ARC of Demonglass. Of course, I devoured it immediately.

Hex Hall

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus.Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Characters
Sophie is a great character - vulnerable, ballsy, hilariously snarky. The inner dialogue is snappy and the book is pacy. Now, lets talk about Archer a bit - hotty, magical, cutie patootie. He's
The humor was perfect for me - a good balance. I laughed out loud many times. I love that it is a light, fun, pacy paranormal. Not too dark. Just the right mixture.

Cover Love
I love the reflection on this cover. It's bright and unique, and I think it captures the mixture of fun and intensity this book conveys quite well. Once you've read the story, you'll totally get it and how it connects!

10. Waiting on Wednesday: October 7 - NEEDS PIC

Title: Hex Hall
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Series: first in a series of Hex Hall books
US Release date: March 2, 2010

Summary (from Amazon.com): Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father-an elusive European warlock-only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Why I'm interested: Hex Hall (as in the school) sounds really interesting. I love how Rachel Hawkins is combining all these supernatural beings - witches, faeries, and more. Then, she adds in a secret society and lots of mystery. Sounds sweet to me.

What's your pick this Wednesday?
