Vine, Twitter’s mobile looped video app, is less than a year old and still remains a new frontier. Not everyone is sure how to use it and like most of the Internet, the common subject matter of Vines center around cats, babies and high school kids. For that reason, the people who are experimenting with the capabilities of Vine as a medium truly stand out.
Etsy has recently produced a handful of stop motion Vines that are not only fun to watch, they reinforce the DIY aesthetic that defines the online market’s brand. Etsy’s initial Vines were a product of Hack Week, an event where the company’s engineers are encouraged to abandon their regular work and focus on any project of their choosing. Nicole Licht and Clare McGibbon, one of Etsy’s in-house designers and support staff members, respectively, decided to take advantage of the event. “The goal for us during that week was to jump start Etsy’s participation on Vine, experiment, and collaborate across teams,” Licht told Cartoon Brew.
Even though the team had no experience in stop motion animation, they set out to make at least one video a day. Prior to each shoot, they sketched out their ideas and gathered craft supplies, but kept their agenda loose. “We found that improvising and seeing how the materials responded in the moment made the most sense,” said Licht. With just natural lighting, a lightweight tripod, and an iPhone mount, the process of making a single six second vine took anywhere between one and four hours. “We really had to just go for it once we started shooting,” added Licht. “With Vine, you either post or not. There are no editing or saving functions, so we never reshot.”
Few other companies, thus far, have discovered how to effectively use Vine. They could certainly take a lesson from Etsy, where employees are given the freedom to take new approaches and experiment with ideas and tools along the way.

i love how humbling it is to be recognized by other artists and i love the opportunity etsy provides by allowing artists of all types to share their gift with the world.
as for little olivine here, i am so emotionally attached to this little mermaid. i mean art for me is always an emotional attachment. i sometimes wonder if you have to be another one of *us* to really understand that. that feeling of if you can't paint/draw/create, that you can't survive. that is how i feel every single day of my life and i live and breathe to do it and i do it to live and breathe. without it there is nothing. not for me anyway. no amount of money or anything/anyone could take it's place. it's not only a part of me...it is ALL of me.
with that being said, when little olivine sells, i will shed some tears for sure. bittersweet ones, knowing that she will be making some little girl very happy. besides, she can't live in my studio forever...and she's always in my heart because that's where she came from to begin with :)
such a sap, i know...
speaking of mermaids, i'm still working on the whole series, just having some neck and arm pain right now so trying to take it easy a bit. which is something that does not come easy for me.

After a busy week of helping out with science projects and play practice, I settled in for some drawing, painting and making in the studio. The weather is amazing, and the sun is pouring in my windows.
I carved some stamps and a small plate for printing, and helped carve another little stamp to illustrate a science experiment. - don't worry, these were behavioral studies :)
This note card is a linoleum print with collage flowers. Since I actually left town this week - hurray! - I stopped at a craft store and bought some screen printing supplies: drawing fluid and screen filler. I've been playing with paper stencils, and I'm ready to make something more permanent. Very exciting!

well, the first day of March has officially arrived, which means spring is not too far off. happy for most people right? not so much for me, as winter is my favorite season and we seem to have gotten shafted of yet another really snowy winter (which makes the arrival of spring even harder for me to digest) :(
anyhoo...my beautiful aquamarine hued mermaid, Beryl, has been featured in a treasury over at etsy welcoming in the new month. take a peek at some of the other interesting pieces she has featured in shades of the calming and peacefully beautiful aquamarine.
below are some crops of March themed illustrations and their links, where you can purchase prints of them.
oh, and Easter is early this year (March 24th) so i believe there may be a CUTE little bunny FOR SALE in my shop as well, an ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING. check him out, if you will....:)
valentine's day is fast approaching and one place to find something stylish and original is the thimblepress by kristen ley's etsy shop. here i have picked out some of their beautiful prints and a whole selection of valentine's cards.
Posting a couple of oldies here, whilst I get my head around Photoshop and while I tackle (struggle with) my tax returns. It really is the worse job of the year. Made only worse when you leave it until the last minute.
These drawings are both on sale. And, are both on a sale (?). Excuse me for peddling my wares but yes, I'm skint again. It seems being a professional doodler isn't the most lucrative way of making a living. The original, of the drawing above, is on sale at a ridiculously cheap price. One of my gorgeous friends said that this drawing was like 'jewellery flotsam, a tide-line of trinkets' and, you know, that's exactly the effect I was going for. The price has been reduced, by a third, and you can buy it
HERE.
The print of this, probably my most famous drawing, is also currently on sale. HALF PRICE! And you can get your mits on it
HERE.
The day started so well. Me, and this drawing, are featured in the London Metro today. In a piece about doodling. If you'd like to read it here's
THE LINK. To be honest, just being mentioned in the same article as
Larry David has made my day, week, year.
Something tells me, though, that today's going to go downhill from here. Right then, *rolls up sleeves* come on you tax returns. Let's be having you.

How could I not draw one of these?
5.5" x 4.5"-ish on 8"x 8" Stonehenge paper
If you don't know, its a Hostess Cupcake. Its an iconic American snack food. We all remember eating these as kids. And recently, Hostess announced they were going out of business. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So there was a run on these at the stores, and I managed to get the last package at my local grocer's.
I have a fond memory of touring the Wonder / Hostess plant here on a school field trip in about the second grade. The place smelled so wonderful! And we were all given a wee tiny little loaf of freshly baked Wonder Bread to take with us. I always loved driving by the place, rolling down the windows to catch that heavenly freshly-baked scent. But now, alas, its quiet and empty and there are no more fresh bread smells. Very sad. Very sad indeed.
So I drew a cupcake for posterity. (I also have a loaf of Wonder Bread and some other goodies in the freezer that may become drawings as well, we'll see.)
I scanned this a few times along the way as I was drawing it, so you can see how it developed.
I started with Coloursofts - this was a layer of Brown Earth.
Then I added more browns, and a layer of Loganberry.
The icing is Polychromo Bistre, Cream, and Ivory.
Then a layer of my beloved Polychromo Caput Mortuum. I love love love that color!
And more of the same on the icing.
To finish off the top I added some PC Sepia and Burnt Sienna.
The icing just got "more".
The cupcake itself was a combination of all the already mentioned colors, just done to look like cake instead of frosting.
I'm not really a fan of burnishing, just because once you 'go there' there is no turning back. And doing a lot of it can hurt your hand (well, mine, anyway). But to get the frosting to look really smooth, I had to burnish a bit. Then the rest of it had to get burnished as well, just so it all looked the same. So this piece was pretty fussy, but it was still a lot of fun to do.
I've put it up for auction on ebay,
here. I started the bidding high, because I'm rusty on 'ebay-ing' and couldn't find the reserve listing thing they used to have (with that, you can start bidding low, but set a reserve price so that if the bidding doesn't go high enough, no one will get it). I don't want it to sell
too cheap. It may not sell at all! And if not, I'll put it in my etsy shop.
I did do prints in the
etsy shop though.
Not sure what's next - maybe a Twinkie? All I could get on that last day were chocolate cream ones, not the white gooey ones, so I'm dithering about whether to do them or not. Wait, I think I have some Ho-Hos ...

Looking for the Real Thing?
Purchasing an original is a big deal.
Not only is the price demanding, but you're investing in something unique, one of a kind, fragile, and ultimately an asset to you and your legacy.
Sounds deep, but art collecting truly is just that.
My goal this year is to make my originals
more obtainable to you. Throughout the year you will find them on
Facebook in a photo album, here under
Art for Sale, and hopefully soon on my
website.
The blog is the simplest way to purchase an original. Visit
Art for Sale (found at the top of this page), find the piece, and click
Purchase.
It goes through
Paypal, and if that doesn't work for you, please
Email me and we can make an arrangement. If you've ever done business with me, then you know I'll do whatever is in my abilities to make it work for you.
Buying art isn't like buying something from the store, it's an investment...remember? I make that investment too by serving you, getting to know who you are, and if possible check in and see how that piece is working for you and your home.
I also create Custom Work If you're interested in owning an original, but don't see one you'd like to purchase simply request a custom piece by visiting my
Etsy shop and contacting me through the
"Request custom item" link there, or email me.
Please be sure to read these Policies first before you ask for a custom piece...as it should answer most of your questions.New works will be added often, so keep your eye on the
Art for Sale page by bookmarking it!
from time to time i post up a print theme and this time it focuses on tribal designs which can currently be seen on all manor of fashion items, art prints, and phone cases. the inspiration for this theme comes from aztec and navajo type motifs as well as nordic influences and a recent trend for all things triangular. to demonstrate the theme i have picked out some products and designs from etsy

~HAPPY WINTER~
Etsy, as you might know, is a flourishing online marketplace for independent artists, designers, and antiquers to sell and trade their wares. There are thousands of items in a ton of categories, from zines to custom-made wedding gowns to homemade soap and vintage lunchboxes. It’s not all great–they don’t have a parody site, Regretsy (NSFW), for nothing–but there are some gems. Here are some items available on Etsy that might spruce up your teen section, serve as a great prize for a reading contest, or just suit your own librarian style. And what’s better? Start a conversation with your craftiest patrons about what they’d do with an Etsy storefront, or use your library Pinterest account to pin all of your favorite (or most laughable) Etsy products.
Librarians Dewey It Better badge:
There’s a little bit of pin-up girl in all of us. This patch by user BadgesbyQuake will let you shout that out to anyone who sees your…tote bag?
Build-a-Library Invitation:
Okay, so this isn’t really for the library, but it’s such an adorable idea I couldn’t resist! This is an excellent theme idea by user lilmoptop for a fellow librarian’s baby shower or wedding–or, frankly, any occasion, because who isn’t always building their personal library?
Vintage Children’s Book Mobile:
If you’re looking to spruce up your children’s or teens’ section with something other than the latest READ poster, this mobile by user theshophouse, made up of intricately folded pages from a vintage book, seems like just the thing.
Art Doll Miniatures:
Gah! These handmade dolls by user UneekDollDesigns of famous historical figures and book characters are to die for! If you can spring for a few, you can set them out for themed months or put your own craft hat on and throw them in a diorama you make. With so many options, from Madeleine l’Engle to Walt Whitman, you’ll probably want to buy quite a few more than your wallet will let you.
Author Magnets:
More author goodness! With these handmade magnets by user TurtleDoves, plus maybe some magnetic paint
if your director will let you redecorate your section, you can start a “fridge.” Next step: magnetic poetry slams.
Shakespeare and Company print:
Inspire your teens to drink coffee, wear black, and write poetry with this print of Paris’ famed bookstore by user robert
belgian based company ricobel have just opened a new etsy shop selling a mix of marvellous vintage wallpapers and cute japanese fabrics. here are my pick the retro wallpaper patterns currently in stock.
luclatulippe:
Maybe if Etsy’s “crafters only” business model also applied to themselves—DIY computers made from egg cartons and lawnmower parts, internet run on hamster-wheels, office inside a treehouse—I could get behind it.
As it stands, Etsy earns around $90 million a year off their sellers, who themselves on average each earn less than minimum wage from sales of their own work. *cough* (Slave labor!) *cough*
Anyway, here they are looking like mean ol’ jerks:
In January, e-commerce site Etsy.com banned Tracy Robertson from selling goods on its marketplace after discovering that she had outsourced some of her work.
“My business is completely crippled right now,” Robertson, a model and fashion designer, wrote in an email to Etsy after the company pulled the plug on her account. “I moved my entire catalog over to Etsy and closed my personal Web site because I loved and trusted your platform so much.”
Etsy, which promises shoppers handmade items, stood by its action. Robertson had delegated too much of her operation to other people, leading Etsy to flag her items as “factory made” and revoke her right to sell on the site.
It should also be noted that Robertson, above, relied exclusively on Etsy for sales (even closing her own website), and this is always a bad idea. Don’t build your business entirely on someone else’s platform. And read the TOS.
What do you think about this? Any Etsy sellers out there who’d like to comment?
the ampersand design studio will be at surtex next week in booth 474. ampersand was formed in kansas city by carrie kiefer & morgan georgie who previously worked as a designer and art director at hallmark cards on the giftwrap and partyware lines. this year they are so excited to debut their own collection of surface pattern designs are available for license for any product including stationery
the imaginary press have launched a brand new collection of bright, bold and affordable prints created especially for them by illustrator and printmaker lo cole. the first series of fun and colourful designs for spring summer 2012 are now available online here at etsy.

It's always fun to do an interview,
knowing how much I enjoy reading about others. To gain a bit of insight of who they are really helps me better understand their work.
Today an interview was posted about my work and a little about me.

For the next three days you can get BOGO over at the Etsy shop. Buy one get one free

Crazy busy month, yes, and only two more weeks of it! Soakin' it in. :)
it has been so hot here in england for the last couple of weeks that this sun print from artist jane ormes seemed very appropriate. the screenprinted design is called 'bring me sunshine' and was one of her new pieces for the exhibition printfest, along with these two charming owls below. jane also has lots of other new gocco prints currently for sale in her etsy shop here.
I managed to fall down my stairs and land on my right knee SPLAT! Ouch.. Ouch... Ouch!! I hit so hard it knocked the wind out of me. I don't get along with my stairs (I seriously fall up them as well).
Here is some artwork I added to my
Etsy shop today.
Happy Friday
roddy & ginger are having a 25% off sale in their etsy shop until 20th july and this gave me the perfect excuse to showcase some of their latest designs. i especially loved the mid century colours and pattern of 'twister' shown above and below.
UK 32p Edward Lear stamp encased in glass. This stamp features an entry from his alphabet book, and is part of the 1988 Edward Lear set. The glass pieces are wrapped with foil and soldered (with lead-free solder), then a pendant bail is attached with epoxy.
As many of people know, while I do draw cute things, they tend to have a darker side. I have been lately working on some art that is more on the cute side without the twists and darkness. That is not to mean I am giving up my dark, whimsical view of fairy tales, but diversifying my art.

The Sweet Little Mermaid
So I would like to introduce my new line of art known as Little Fairytale Art, a new line of prints and jewelry brought to you by Diana Levin Art. I have decided to run this line as a separate etsy store, starting with three pieces that will gradually expand over time. This store will run in conjunction with my regular etsy store, allowing me to show the two sides of my art, growing each store individually while having some crossover. As the lines progress, they may merge into one store or each may grow into further different directions becoming even more unique collections.
Its knitting season!
I've had a
knitting shop on etsy for a while, which I haven't "worked" much. At all. In fact, I've emptied it out altogether more than once, and left it sitting there, abandoned, for long periods of time.
But I have all this yarn. A lot of yarn. Seriously. I'm a yarnaholic. Some of you might like beads, or colored pencils, or fabric, or something else. You know what I'm talking about. Your 'thing' is on sale somewhere, and its calling out to you. You never need it, you just have to have it.
Well, that's how I am with yarn.
Sometimes I just can't commit to doing a whole big project, like a shawl or big scarf even, because of time. So I've been trying to come up with something small I can make, that's fun and cool.
I love love love love cables, so starting playing with some ideas. How could I make a 'stand alone' piece of cabling, not attached to a sweater or something? Usually you see cabling done within a panel, with plainer stitches on either side. I wondered what would happen if I just isolated them. What would it look like? Sometimes you try these genius ideas and end up with a hot mess.
But this time my idea worked. I actually started with a much more complicated braided piece, then edited it down to these simpler ones. And having it look like a bow tie was a happy accident! My intention was to make an accent pin - something you could wear for a pop of color or texture on a sweater or jacket. The larger ones just happen to look like a bow tie.
So I sewed a pin back to the back of each one, and voila! We have Cable Knit Bow Tie Pins and Mini Cable Knit Bow Pins.
It was fun to make the little cards to pin them to. Taking the pictures for the shop is never my favorite thing, but a necessary evil. (I always wonder about the people who do the pro photo shoots, with models and all. How on earth do they manage that?) So I do the best I can.
There are 25 new pieces in the
shop, mostly all Fall-ish colors. Christmas and holiday ones are in the works. I hope to do some hair clips and other little goodies too. How cute would these be on pet collars? If you have an idea for one, or would like to commission me to make some for you, please let me know!

Had to get the dust rag out for my poor blog here. Figured I'd better post something, anything, just to keep things going. Its amazing how much time goes by before you realize "hey! I haven't blogged in forever."
I decided to list a few more (OK, quite a few more) pieces on etsy. Prints, and originals too.
There's some picture book art ~
Mad Cats
Cozy Quilt
Bedtime Story
and some dark ones too, just for fun ~

And also some food, of course ~

I've done more than these, and there are more queued up to be listed over the next few days. Christmas is coming, and I figure people might want to give some nice art for presents. Hope so, anyway. I'm sure I could squeeze in a commission or two before then, so if you're thinking of giving an original piece of art, please give me a holler!
I also have some drawings of yarn and knitting, which I'm thinking of putting in the knitting shop, just to jazz it up over there a bit. {{ In my free time. }}
As I write this, that horrible Frankenstorm is threatening the East Coast. I shudder just thinking about it. Praying everyone will be safe and sound, and all the critters too. Its been lovely here, with just the right amount of sun, and just cool enough at night for cozy jammies and blanket. And a cat or two.
