1. it's that time again...

that time i usually set aside annually (or biannually in this case) to poke my eyes out and sprout a few more grey hairs than i'd probably like to admit. yes, it's website redo time. my most favorite thing to do. {insert sarcasm...and lots of it}

i digress, as it is something i don't exactly look forward to but am always grateful in the end that i took on. {did i mention i'd SO rather be at the easel...}

so....hopefully in about a week, i'll have a new site (and blog) with a bit of tweaking added in...and a grey hair or two. ;)

i can still be reached for commissions here as i'm working on setting up a new email addy to go with the site. also, my etsy shop is still open with an upcoming SUMMER SALE to be launched soon!

busy as a little buzzing bee (or tiny little tower of power, as i like to call myself ;) )... Read the rest of this post

2. woodless graphite....

is a beautiful thing!

this is how EVERY painting begins....for me, anyway.

i draw/sketch out my idea in my sketchbook (sized at the same size the painting will be). in this step, i am extremely detailed and precise, making sure i have everything drawn/sketched out EXACTLY the way it will appear on the canvas. the more exact and precise i am in the drawing/sketching stage, the easier it is for me to execute the finished painting.

once the drawing/sketch is perfected, i then re trace over my own drawing/sketch with tracing paper....every line, every detail, everything...completely re traced. once that is done, i will take a piece of woodless graphite OR, if i don't have a piece laying around, i will use a VERY soft lead pencil (usually an 8B...6B at the very least). with that, i *scribble* very methodically on the back of my tracing....being sure to cover every line i have just traced so that i can transfer the drawing/sketch exactly as it appears in my sketchbook.

then, i lay the tracing (paper) with the graphite on the back over the canvas and press down with a 4H lead pencil to transfer the drawing to the canvas ever so perfectly.

and that, my friends, is how Nicole rolls...old school. that's how i worked in college...and that's how i work today. keeping it real and true to myself.

i am a traditional painter. ALWAYS a (traditional) painter. :)

On exterior walls she paints with spray paint and gives new life to the drab, gray walls of abandoned builds throughout the streets of Lisbon. Maria says she likes to make simple drawings, using vibrant and happy colors.

8. Illustrator and Painter Miss Led - Falling Angels

Award winning live painter and illustrator, Joanna Henly, a.k.a. Miss Led is taking on the art world like an F5 tornado. The only woman who has ever won the internationally renowned urban street art competition ‘Secret Wars’, her art is so good you can practically taste it. Provocative, sultry, seductive linework and color that has graced the faces of canvases, walls, and even sneakers and cars. Miss Led's artwork is like a stinging smack on the ass that is so painfully good you find yourself wanting more. But why take someone else's word for it? Something like that you should experience yourself - shouldn't you?

London based, award winning illustrator, painter, muralist and performer with distinctive and diverse styles, Miss Led work ranges from canvas to cars.

9. They Call Me The Seeker - Artist Karo Akpokiere

Bold and aggressive - strong, heavy line-work -  colors that explode off the page - it's such an indescribable, rush when an artist's work is so fantastic that it's difficult to select specific pieces to highlight in their feature on IP. Karo Akpokiere's art is a mixed style - with the line-work of German Expressionism, (printmakers Nolde and Schmidt-Rottluff come to mind), the energetic colors of a Fauvism and the straight up street style of graffiti art.

Influence, influence, influence - the more artists you study the more depth your artwork will have. Every great artist was influenced by another artist - this is the evolution of art.

Karo Akpokiere has an insatiable appetite for drawing, painting and art overall. He is deeply interested in how all forms of art influence his work. He challenges himself to create art in different media to bring awareness not only to his own work, but also to the various forms of art and artists that inspire him.

10. Experimenting with Woodcut

I have been experimenting with the woodcut feature in Painter.  I think I can take some images into a new direction with some careful planning.  It could be fun to create an entire book in a similar style. It would depend upon the subject matter, but I do have one story in mind for the future.

11. The Other Reality as Depicted by Artist Brandt Hardin

Brandt Hardin is a talented artist with a flair for the unusual - sometimes shocking and often disturbing. There's a hint of surrealism in his art with a heavy dose of graffiti, peppered with a dash of expressionism. Brandt's art tells the story of society's self indulgence, its violent unrest and the crushing isolation and loneliness of its individuals - issues that plague our modern day world. The outcome of these stories is left to his viewers. Tragedy looms heavy over many of Brandt Hardin's subjects, these accidental, freakish characters, plucked from reality, struggling to cope with the harshness of the environment that has been forced upon them. Who are these disturbed individuals and what will come of them? Are you sympathetic to their plight or do you condemn them for who they are or what they seem to be?

12. The Bold and Beautiful Artwork of Veteran Artist Lo Cole

Lo Cole’s distinctive artwork first came to prominence in the mid-1980s when he was invited to produce the controversial album sleeve designs for Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Welcome To The Pleasuredome.” Voted ‘best dressed record sleeve of the year,’ by the NME reader’s poll, Lo’s work was launched on a market that has provided him with employment as an artist and illustrator over 25 years.

His work regularly features in national newspapers and magazines such as The Sunday Times, Vogue, Elle magazine, The Boston Globe and more, where his humorous and abstracted approach to imagery is highly identifiable.

As a poster artist, Lo has produced dynamic designs for clients including the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Londo

13. Illustrator Mark Hammermeister – You Had Me With Your Jimi Hendrix

Detroit illustrator Mark Hammermeister is one skilled artist with the pixels. This seriously talented, digital painter is laying down some seriously fantastic, stylized digital art. Look at the level of detail in that Jimi Hendrix illustration below. Look at the pattern in the shirt and the individual strands of hair! Mark wrote on his blog that it took him three hours to do this painting in Photoshop. Three hours – are you kidding me? It was painted over a ballpoint pen sketch. If this took Mark only three hours to create - what can he do in eight – recreate the Sistine Chapel? Hammermeister style!

The images below I could let go on forever. They're just so incredible. Wouldn't you agree?

15. Is Your “Wilson” A Sketchbook?

Are you an artist who brings a sketchbook with you everywhere you go – consistently jotting down almost every place you visit – almost every thought - just about everything you see? Some artists can’t leave the house without a sketchbook – one in the car – one in a backpack – a small one in a pocket. Do you think Tommy Kane is an artist whose constant companion is a sketchbook?

Eat, sleep and breathe design – there are others out there who do – that’s what a professor once told me upon my first day of college. He was a graphic design professor, who unfortunately passed away soon thereafter. I never had the benefit of learning more from him. But his words remained forever engrained in my mind. Of course they didn’t only apply to design. They apply to art in general. Tommy Kane seems to be one of those “others” that eats, sleeps and breathes art. That would explain his intense understanding of art and his ability to create such compelling graphic design and beautiful drawings and paintings. Perhaps he’s discovered the contentment and solace that can be found inside one’s mind recording personal experiences and the world around him inside a sketchbook.

16. Discover Endless Humor in the Paintings of Artist Nate Owens

The expressions on the faces of the characters in Nate Owens’ paintings are priceless – not to mention the situations he puts them in. His art has a Norman Rockwell feel to it. Wouldn’t you agree? There’s so much to look at in every painting – each with its own unique story to tell. He’s certainly an artist that loves what he does and is having a good time doing it. As you look through his art you’ll find that there’s also a serious side to Nate Owens, evident in many of his other beautifully rendered paintings. Whatever the subject matter, Nate Owens’ approach to painting is that of an exceptionally skilled craftsman on a noble quest to make us smile.

Nate Owens has been doing illustrations for publication and gallery art (oils, watercolors, acrylics, etc.) for years. His art has appeared on everything from bus benches to ads, magazine illustrations, TV spots and gift products like coffee mugs, shirts, greeting cards and wall decor prints.

19. Artist Camilla d'Errico on Facebook - Determination and Destiny

Camilla knew she was meant to be an artist when she arrived at Comic Con International in 1998 and saw the clouds part and heard the angels sing. How’s that for realizing your destiny?

Artist Camilla d'Errico is a product of her split heritage, Italian and Canadian rolled into one: Italian feistiness, Canadian politeness, and an early addiction to Saturday morning cartoons, comics and manga. Growing up she was more often doodling sexy damsels and dragons on her textbooks rather than reading them. Today she is following her dream of working creatively for a living thanks to her relentless energy, dedication, and just enough sleep deprivation.

What drives Camilla d'Errico to create? It’s a love for what she does – an unremitting devotion and a strong resolve to succeed.

Never regret what you do but regret what you don't. If you’re passionate about it – don’t hold back and go for it. - Camilla d'Errico

Art is most often a labor of love as many artists know. There’s an unexplainable, driving force deep within every artist that compels us to create. If we’re ever stripped of the opportunity to explore our imaginations or deprived of the time we need to record our dreams and bring them to life, we become empty and fragile, frustrated and angry. All creative souls understand.

Many of us have an understanding of what it takes

Megan Duncanson is a self taught contemporary artist living out her dream of creating beautiful artwork in her studio at the remote location of Meyers Chuck, Alaska.

25. The Fine Art Paintings of Artist Lorna Allen on Facebook

Are you familiar with the work of artist Eyvind Earle? Well among his many accomplishments as an artist Eyvind Earle was responsible for the styling, background art and colors for the Disney classic, sleeping beauty. He also worked on many other Disney films throughout the 1950s. He has been described as an artist who pursues beauty – his work described as striking and beautiful.

Lorna Allen is a self taught artist from New Zealand; an artist, like Earle, who pursues beauty, creating remarkably gorgeous landscapes. And although there isn't an obvious similarity between the two artists in reference to technique, their artwork has a similar atmosphere about them and a magical quality, both approaching the exquisiteness of a landscape in there own unique styles.

Lorna Allen records her world in a way that sooths your soul and shelters you from the harshness of realty. Her enchanted paintings are richly colored, alluring scenes that grant us the opportunity to see the peacefulness and magnificence of nature through her eyes.
