My latest book I illustrated was officially released- What's Going On At The Time Tonight? was written by Gerald Mercer published through Nimbus Publishing.
"What’s Going On at the Time Tonight? is a sweet and rollicking rhyming book about a Newfoundland “time”—a party—with a twist: it’s underwater! The sea lice are boogying, the jiggly jellyfish are riding the wave, and everyone is having a good time tonight."
It's available at Nimbus Publishing, Amazon and Indigo/Chapters!

Winter is on the way OUT! I say this as a huge storm is coming into Colorado right NOW!! No, I did not go to the grocery store in freak out mode stocking my cupboards. Instead, I spent a bit of time today digging in my garden resisting the urge to acknowledge the storm at all! ha!
Alas, tonight I will hunker down with my pens and paper and continue to work towards deadlines for up and coming trade shows. That is the good thing about storms! They keep me focused. I wonder how many artists are like me?
I have one problem. I can’t seem to go out to my studio to work. It’s covered with papers, receipts, file folders etc. It is my new book-keeping system in progress. Eeeeek! My friend is helping me set up my Quick Books program. She entered all my checks, deposits etc, and sent me the disk. I bought the program, installed it, imported my files… … then I went to reconcile the two bank statements that my friend did not add and suddenly I am thirty dollars off! What on earth? What could I have done?
So, I did what I do best, I locked the studio door and went in the house. ha! My right brain is not in the mood for numbers! Happy Spring everyone!

Peepsqueak LOVES BEARS! …. and so do I!! I LOVE toys! I love weird toys, stuff animals, special teddy bears, and more. Having three grandsons gives me a great excuse to buy MORE toys! I took a trip to the thrift store just this week to look for action figures! I ran them through the dishwasher and stowed in my big toy trunk. Three more trucks are sitting near the book-case in the “YaYa” room. Its great fun! On Tuesday I played “Superhero”! My youngest grandson loves the stuffies! Including my own little Peeksqueak plush by Merry Makers. If you want to order one, you can go to the website, or call them.
retail orders online at http://www.merrymakersinc.com and retail and/or wholesale orders at 888-989-0454 or via email at merrymakers@merrymakersinc.com
They are a great toy company. I want ALL THEIR TOYS! ha ha!
You can also find Peepsqueak on his Facebook page. I am going to have another book Give-A-Way as soon as the new toy gets here! Peepsqueak and I are so excited! I may also put it on this Word Press site so stay posted!

I love flowers!
The weather is teasing me! A warm day, a nice breeze, flowers peeking from the cold wet ground, and then WHAM! A freak snow storm! Such is life in Colorado. Peepsqueak is not worried. As you can see in this picture, he is thrilled to find the first Spring flower.
Do you have any flowers up yet? We only have a few tulips and iris peeking out of the dirt. Flowers are still a few weeks away. I am ready!

Why did I decide to write Grandma, how do you know God is real?
by Lorita Kelsey Childress
I have a grandchild who I adore and love with all of my heart. She is a joy, very inquisitive and bright. She has been going to church with my husband and me since she was born. One day, I was praying about my next project and telling God I wanted to write a children’s book to leave as a legacy for my granddaughter, Kamia. I didn’t want just any story but a story that honored the God; I serve which would uniquely evangelize to her and all children of the world regarding the multitude of reasons as to why God is real. I also wanted a book which would remind adults about the everyday things we take for granted that He has created. We as a society are inundated with just living life and often forget that an old tree, green grass or a bird flying are all beautiful creations designed by God. I wanted to convey through my writing a thought provoking fun story which had great illustrations and simplistic teachings. Thus my book was imparted into my spirit.
As Christians our faith is increased by attending Sunday school, church and reading the Bible. These are instrumental tools in aiding us with continually building a strong deep rooted foundation in our Christian walk and our relationship with or Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. However, at a young age it is often hard to decipher. I wrote Grandma, how do you know God is real? to help children obtain another point of view regarding our God and to unite those who read it by rejoicing over His many blessings.
Title:Grandma How Do You Know God Is Real?
Synopsis: Grandma, how do you know God is real is about a six-and-a-half-year-old girl named Kendra, who spends a few weeks of her summer vacation with her Grandma. She awakens one bright and sunny morning and asks her Grandma how does she know God is real? Grandma takes Kendra on an adventure to show her all the reasons as to why she knows God is real.
Bio: Lorita Kelsey Childress lives with her husband David, in Northern CA. She has three daughters and a granddaughter. Lorita’s first novel The Turning Point of Lila Louise was published in May 2010. December 2012, she published her first children’s book titled, Grandma, how do you know God is real? She is a member of Sistahs on the Reading Edge book club. Lorita’s work is featured in Gumbo for the Soul; The Recipe for Literacy in the Black Community and Gumbo for the Soul; Women of Honor Special Pink Edition. Her latest work is featured in Suspect; A Confessional Anthology. Her poem Our History is Rich was featured in the January/March 2010 edition of Kontagious Magazine. She is currently working on her second novel.

Come February, without fail, I begin to feel the effects of Spring Fever. My tulips are peeking out, our trees are budding, and my heart begins pining away for warm weather. THEN it SNOWS 8 inches! haha!
There is no complaining on my part. Colorado needs the moisture! Like Peepsqueak, (above) I put on my coat and scarf and set off in our winter wonderland. Spring will arrive as it alway does, but there are sidewalks to shovel and a wood stove to load and lots of indoor activities to keep me busy until snow gives way to rain and flowers.

Just in the time for the Christmas season! Do you have a young girl on your Christmas list? Give the gift of a charming children's book today.
About Birds in a Flower Basket: Abbi’s mother struggles to keep her flowering plant alive while birds raise their family in it. This gives Abbi a valuable lesson on how birds create a nest and raise their young. It is a learning experience from identifying the birds through watching the young hatchlings grow and take wing.

I'm getting a jump start on Valentine's Day this year.
I listened to the ALA Caldecott Award announcements live this morning. So exciting. It's like the Academy Awards for Illustrators. I was thrilled that

This is Not my Hat (this book is so fun) in the same year. Wow! Has that ever happened before? I'm also so happy that
Peter Brown got an honor award for

“Welcome to the studio, Dahlia! I am so glad to meet you! Your entrance made me smile! Now let’s get down to business! Tell me about yourself? “.
When I create a new character I have to find out who they really are and what makes them tick! Will they be loud and boisterous? Will they be shy and hold back? Will they run to meet the world or hide behind trees and bushes? It’s great fun to imagine!
Since Dahlia is new, let’s walk this process together. Let’s get a good look at her and ask ourselves some questions.

Here she is, in her great BIGness. As you can see, Dahlia is running! That gives us our first clue. She is ready to meet the world!
(Another little tidbit you can use when creating a character. It is a link to writing a character profile. I can get your wheels turning!)
http://www.squidoo.com/CharacterProfiles
In order to decide WHO Dahlia is, I look into her face. Her eyes are not like our eyes, but expression and body language are quite helpful.
Dahlia is running. Dahlia is laughing. Dalia is carrying a flower. Dahlia is practically leaping off the ground! I can almost hear the ground shaking! So, she is a “ground shaking” happy elephant.
But wait! She has no tusks! That tells me she is a baby elephant. My imagination is taking off now! Dahlia tromps! … but no… I found out that tromp is not a word… (hmmm…it seemed so fitting). So, Dahlia thumps, stomps, tramples and plows through! Thank you dictionary.com! Love all those words!
Looking again at this picture, I see that Dahlia is also clumsy. She trips, stumbles, tumbles, plunges, sprawls and topples. Even so, she is not bothered by falls. She simply rolls over and gets back up to her feet laughing! “What great fun!” she gigglies, “Let’s do it again!”
This tells me that Dahlia does not take herself too seriously. She is playful, but is she smart?
More of her qualities may surface once the other characters in her story emerge. Bring on the monkeys!

Today, I'm part of Jo Linsdell's virtual book tour for her new children's book
Fairy May. And, she has helpful guest post for us on book marketing.
Building a platform and promoting a book
Guest Post by Jo LinsdellWe all know that having a platform is important. Having a recognised author brand with thousands of blog readers and social media followers is fantastic but it's not enough. You need to make it easy for people to buy your book too.
Even the most famous of authors do 'launches' for their new releases. I'm not saying that working on building your platform is wrong. Far from it. Building a strong author platform is very important. It gives you an audience and establishes you as an expert in your field. You need to put your latest release in front of people though if you want them to buy it.
Ways you can promote your book:• A virtual book tour. This is where you organise to be hosted on blogs and for social media chats, radio interviews etc... over a set period of time. A virtual book tour can include anything from interviews, guest posts, book spotlights and reviews to Facebook wall chats, live twitter interviews and more.
• Do a give away. Offer a free give away to anyone who buys a copy of your book within a set time frame and promote it via social media. An example could be a short ebook.
• Create a contest. This can be done via Goodreads or social media sites like Facebook. For a chance to win a valuable prize, people need to buy a copy of your book.
• Place ads for targeted promotion. This can be done by using targeted advertising on Facebook or by placing a banner on a website that reaches your target audience.
• Reach out to book clubs. Get your book on the reading list and offer a chance to chat either by visiting the group in person by via Skype.
• Do a book signing. This can be an in person event at a bookstore or other location or online using a site like Author Graph.
What are some of the platform or promotional activities you've done?
Now on to Fairy May.Fairy May dreams of one day becoming a tooth fairy but she struggles at school and always seems to get things wrong. With hard work and determination she prepares for her test. Will she realise her dream and become a tooth fairy?

Oh little Peepsqueak. This picture of you reminds me of something that happened to me when I was little. We were visiting an aunt in Washington. She had a rope that dangled from a tree in her backyard. She also had a big DOG that came running into the yard barking at ME! I jumped on that rope and UP, UP, UP I went! I did not even know I could climb a rope! I just did it! ha ha!
Most of my art comes from my imagination, but it is also from my memories and from my life experiences. All that being said, I think I can still climb a rope!
