Sometimes films take on heavy concepts: life, death, space, time travel. Other times, they take a simpler approach. Sure, it’s hard to argue that American Ultra is doing anything profound or meaningful, but it’s also hard not to have fun with a movie where the primary question seems to be: What if Jason Bourne was a neurotic pothead? 3. Lions Gate Invites Female Filmmakers to Make ‘Twilight’ Short Films

twilightcoverLions Gate will host a contest for aspiring female directors to create short films based on characters from Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight saga. The participants will consult Meyers’ 2011 encyclopedic tome, The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide.

Deadline reports that five winners will be selected to receive production advances to finance their short films. The five installments of “The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of ‘The Twilight Saga’” series will be released exclusively on Facebook in 2015. From there, fans will vote on which filmmaker deserves a grand prize which includes cash and career opportunities.

Here’s more from The New York Times: ”A group of female panelists, including the Twilight actress Kristen Stewart and Ms. Meyer, will select the winning shorts and mentor participants, Lions Gate said. Other panelists include the actresses Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and Julie Bowen; Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first Twilight movie; the film producer Cathy Schulman; and Jennifer Lee, who co-directed Frozen. Certain contest details, including the length of the shorts, are still being worked out and will be made available on Tongal.com, a crowdsourcing platform.”

6. Twilight Fan Killed by Car at Comic-Con

Gisela Gagliardi, a Twilight fan visiting San Diego for Comic-Con, was hit by a car and killed while running across the street in front of the San Diego Convention Center.

The San Diego Union Tribune first reported the sad news ahead of the convention (which begins later this week): “Comic-Con fans said Gagliardi, who was with a group, had been in line since Sunday for the panel for ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2,’ set for Thursday afternoon in Hall H. The highly anticipated panel will include cast appearances and exclusive footage from the movie. Fans said the convention center staff was about to switch the line, so the beginning became the end, and that she was running to keeping her place in line.”

8. Melissa Rosenberg Talks about Adapting ‘Breaking Dawn’

Twihards around the world will watch The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 this weekend. In the latest installment of the blockbuster series, fans can expect to see a dramatic vampire wedding and eventful honeymoon.

We caught up with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to talk about writing scripts and the adaptation process. The highlights follow below…

Q: Describe the writing process when you are charged with adapting a book for a script versus writing an original script.
A: Each comes with its own challenges, but nothing is more difficult than starting with a blank page, as a writer does with an original project. I had the good fortune to start with an already fully fleshed out universe and mythology. But an adaptation comes with its own challenges: Honing a 500 page novel into a 110 page script. Externalizing very internal character arcs. Not pissing off the millions of fans around the world who don’t understand, or frankly care, that a book and a movie are very different animals, and that one can’t simply transfer the entire text into screenplay format and shoot it.

10. Kristen Stewart to play Snow White In a New Film Adaptation of the Old Fairy Tale

It was recently confirmed that the Twilight actress was chosen for the role of Snow White in one of three new film adaptations, the one she'll star being Snow White and the Huntsman.

In this new take of the Grimm Brothers' tale, the Hunter -who'll be played by Viggo Mortensen- will at first be after Snow White (just like in the normal version), but will later become her mentor, in the fight against the Evil Queen (who's expected to be played by Charlize Theron, but there isn't any confirmation about her role yet).

It begins production this August 1st, in London, Scotland and Germany, with plans to release December 21, 2012. The film will be directed by debut director, Rupert Sanders.

There are a lot of people saying that she's a horrible cast, but I'll admit, I quite like her outside of the whole Twilight crap.
