1. Can re-wilding the uplands help to prevent flooding in the lowlands?

The recent flooding in the north of England has prompted calls for better flood defences and river dredging. But these measures are unlikely to work by themselves, especially with the increased likelihood of extreme weather events in the coming years. A new approach is needed that considers whole catchment management – starting with the source of rivers in upland areas.

About the Author: Angela Muse

Angela MuseAngela Muse was born in California to a military family. This meant that she got used to being the “new kid” in school every couple of years. It was hard trying to make new friends, but Angela discovered she had a knack for writing. In high school Angela began writing poetry and song lyrics. Expressing herself through writing seemed very natural. After becoming a Mom in 2003, Angela continued her storytelling to her own children. In 2009 she wrote and published her first rhyming children’s book aimed at toddlers. Since then she has released several more children’s picture books and released her first young adult romance series, The Alpha Girls.

Angela’s husband, Ben Muse writes suspense/thriller books that can also be found on Amazon.

3. For the love of trees

I used to climb trees when I was young (and I still, on occasion, do). As a boy in Iraq I had a favoured loquat tree, with branches that bore leathery, serrated leaves, shiny on the upper surface, and densely matted with fine hairs underneath. It seemed so big, though I now reflect it was probably rather small. I would haul myself up and over the lowest branch, making whatever use of the twists and folds of the trunk as provided purchase to my small feet.

4. we're words upon a window written there in steam

Jeepers creepers, the things you do to avoid doing your tax returns, eh? I've actually, finally, updated my children's book blog. I was shocked to see quit how long that project has been put on the back burner, but it was a joy to finally start working on it again. I don't like to blow my own trumpet but I'm rather pleased with this drawing.

There's an explanation for this picture, and another drawing, over on my 'book on a blog' blog! Enter HERE.

5. Acorn needle book - redesigned

Just in time for fall, here's an update to my acorn needle book. I happened to find a little length of Japanese ribbon with squirrels on it at a sweet little shop called Polka Dot Kids. I don't have kids but for some reason... I'm not sure why... I still go into this shop anytime I'm passing by.

Often I tell myself I'd better not splurge on something just because it's adorable. But ribbon with squirrels on it? Well that's actually a logical addition to my sewing supplies. In fact, since I didn't already have ribbon with squirrels on it, I was essentially filling a gap in my supplies. You know, being practical.

So now the acorn needle book is back, with a little squirrel ribbon for a stem and quilt batting inside to give it more structure. I redesigned the shape to be more symmetrical after realizing that the front needed to match the back so that it all lines up when assembled. The acorn needle book is in my shop now, with more on the way.

6. long agos and worlds apart

Hello, folks.

At last a post. Sorry, no drawing as yet. And apologies for falling of the face of the earth like that. My life for the last month has been all about the woodland zine.

When will I ever learn? Once again I totally underestimated the time and effort that would go into making 75 lots of handwritten notes in each booklet and 75 teeny weeny letters of provenance. Not to mention 75 handmade gift tags. Then all of the packing and postage - and why just put them all in an envelope and send them off when you can put an envelope in an envelope in an envelope?? And, I ain't going to tell anyone about the three days I spent painting PVA on individual oak leaves with a pastry brush before realising it was probably very illegal to send leaves abroad. Anyway, I'm glad to say everyone of these little buggers are now in the mail. Thanks to all of you who purchased them. I do hope you enjoy them. I really do.

Now, finally, some drawing....

7. like a one man band clapping in the pouring rain

So, I've taken a moment for a little commercial break. I thought I'd just let you know that I have now listed my first three zines (above) as a package. This is the cheapest way of buying them, so it's perfect for those of you who have not yet started your AJ collection (can't tell you how uncomfortable I am about writing this sort of stuff). Anyways, you can find them in my Etsy shop HERE. Also, new to the shop is this hot of the press limited edition zine based on my children's book. I have just 75 of these little fellas for sale. You can read more about them on my children's book blog or HERE.

Plus, in other news, I have recently been interviewed by the folks at the brilliant Empty Kingdom. If you are interested in reading about my work, and me, then click HERE.

Right that's the end of the sales pitch. I promise.

9. all or nothing

So, obviously, everything I said in the last post was a big fat fib.
I'm a liar. A liar. And, it seems, my pants are, indeed, on fire.

10. grey to green

Once again I need to say a great big thank you to you all - for your response to my last post and to the great feedback. It's all much appreciated, and I still have many of you to get back to. I'll get around to it ASAP.

As I said then, I have been meaning to start this new 'book blog' for a long time, but I continued to procrastinate and over think things and then procrastinate some more. Well, not anymore. So, if you are wondering exactly what this is a drawing of, then pop over to my new blog (yikes! I'm nervous) and find out.

While you are there you might, perhaps, who knows, I dunno, if you fell like, maybe, want to start following that blog?

Anyway, I'd love it if you would join me. You can take a look at my new blog HERE.
