Starting this summer, I will be teaching an online course for ALSC called It’s Mutual: School and Public Library Collaboration. As two public institutions, it’s important for us to reach out to each other, especially as budgets tighten. We already share an audience that we hope will turn into lifelong learners (and library users).
With early literacy programming, public libraries are often the first place kids start learning, when they become students we supplement their learning, and hopefully, when students graduate, they will still rely on the library to aid their learning. When schools and public libraries come together they can share expertise, workers, and save money by sharing resources. Let’s say you have a database that doesn’t see a lot of use. If every student has a library card they can all get to the database. If public librarians and school teaching staff get together to teach the students how to use the database, it will get more use and teachers will be aware of its existence to promote it. Collaborations help communities value education and become aware of resources, as well as position public libraries as “educators” too.
I created this course to help public librarians, school librarians, teachers, and school administrators come together to benefit the students and the institutions they belong to as well.
In this class, you will practice making materials for different school services scenarios. You will learn to research local statistics in order to state your case to school administrations and library board members. You will learn to set up a basic yet comprehensive school services program that opens up communication between libraries and schools (and maybe leads to more joint projects). School services librarians are not here to replace school librarians, but to work together on programming, promotion and library resources to benefit our preschool to high school community.

One of the things that I love about librarianship is that it’s a dynamic profession. It is an evolving field that challenges us to continuously learn and grow in our professional development to better serve our communities. As a member of ALSC’s Library Service to Special Population Children and Their Caregivers Committee, we have a specific goal to advocate for special populations children and their caregivers. We strive to discover, develop, and disseminate information about materials, programs and facilities that are available at the library for these groups of patrons. One of the things that we suggest is that library staff at all levels participate in continuing educational programs and classes about serving these special populations. Here is a current list of online resources available through ALSC, ASCLA, YASLA, and Webjunction for you to help you grow in awareness and competency in this area.

ALSC Online Education
Whether you’re going to Las Vegas or not, ALSC has great professional development opportunities for you. This summer ALSc is offering three online courses focusing on red-hot topics that you can take back to your library.
Each courses will run between four and six weeks and will be taught in an online learning community using Moodle. All courses are offered asynchronously (self-directed) meaning you won’t need to logon at a specific time. Courses start Monday, July 14, 2014.

Have an idea for an ALSC webinar or online course? The ALSC Education Committee is adding to ALSC’s online course and webinar offerings. If you are interested in teaching a course or webinar, please fill out the online education proposal form found at ALSC’s website.
In need of some quality online education?
This fall, ALSC is offering five online courses that cover a wide variety of topics related to children’s literature. Four of the are eligible for certified education units (CEUs). The American Library Association (ALA) has been certified to provide CEUs by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET).
Participants in online courses consistently respond that they would be very likely to register for another course offered by ALSC. This fall, ALSC is proud to be offering five great online courses – including two courses that are eliglibe for CEUs, continuing education units.
The American Library Association (ALA) has been certified to provide CEUs by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET). CEUs cannot be given in retrospect; if you’ve already taken one of these ALSC courses you are not eligible to receive CEUs. Additional courses may become CEU-certified in the future.
ALSC online courses are designed to fit the needs of working professionals. Courses are taught by experienced librarians and academics. As participants frequently noted in post-course surveys, ALSC stresses quality and caring in its online education options. Courses start October 1, 2012. Registration is now open.

If you have an hour to spare, consider The Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration – Webinar, free to ALSC members and $55 for nonmembers.
If you have a few hours spread across six weeks, registration is open for the next round of The Caldecott Medal: Understanding Distinguished Art in Picture Books – Online Course taught by Kathleen T. Horning.
If you have a few days available, consider heading to Indianapolis, IN for the ALSC National Institute. This two-and-a-half day biennial workshop features a special Caldecott Celebration for the “Breakfast for Bill” program on Friday morning.

If you thought ALSC only did online courses, you’d be wrong. I mean, we’d appreciate that you knew about our fantastic online courses, but there’s just more to it. We currently find ourselves in heady times for ALSC online learning options. There are online courses, which start July 9, there are webinars, including archived versions which are available for viewing at any time and there is a new brand of online education developed especially for students, called student sessions.

Getting Your First Library Job: Showcasing Skills and Packaging Passion

If you’re a school media specialist, you see them all the time. If you’re a public librarian, they are a rare species, requiring cultivation and proper attention. I’m talking about the elementary school reader, of course! With so many activities and commitments competing for time, attracting elementary school-age readers to the library on a regular basis can be a difficult task. Last fall, with this in mind, I enrolled in ALSC’s online course, Series Programming for the Elementary School Age. I’ve posted about it before (“The Best $95.00 you (or your library) will spend…), but today I want to share the “real-life” outcome of the Geronimo Stilton Club that I created for the course.
After much thought about the best day and time for my club, I decided on Fridays after school. In the course, we planned out our advertising strategies, and I stuck with my plan. While Friday afternoon is not the best day for me, it seems to work well for library patrons. In fact, other than tweaking a few things here and there, I stayed fairly true to the outline that I planned in the course. I did, however, make one fortuitous, late addition to the program.
As you probably know, Geronimo Stilton is a newspaper editor, very fond of cheese and classical music. In week one, the kids read maps and followed directions (necessary for finding treasure, of course!), and they interviewed each other. They used good listening skills to pick out instruments from Vivaldi’s “Spring,” and listened to an audio book excerpt. In week two, we had a newspaper scavenger hunt, and I noticed that the kids of our digital age are, not surprisingly, fairly unfamiliar with the printed press. This started me thinking – and by midnight that evening, I had the idea that I should invite a reporter for a digital news outlet to our next meeting.
On Monday morning, I emailed our local online news provider and within a day, the new editor for our area agreed to come to our Friday afternoon club. I invited her not to interview us, but for us to interview her! What better way to practice our new skills!

We finished up the final week with Geronimo Stilton “mad-libs,” mouse origami, and a rousing game of Pass the Cheese (to classical music, of course). It was fun. It was inexpensive. The kids and parents liked it. All of the survey forms were positive. I only wish that more kids had participated, but, even this doesn’t bother me too much. Because everyone in the Series Programming course shared their projects, I can try it again with a new topic!
Coincidentally, the Series Programming course began again this week. I’d love to see what the current group creates.
