You can view all posts from a specific blog by clicking the Blog name in the right column, or you can click a 'More Posts from this Blog' link in any individual post.
10th April 2007"In my quest to draw everything in my house I stopped by the spice rack. I'm quite happy with this. It reminds me of the illustrations you'd find in recipe books from the 70's. Books that were usually called something like 'The Whole Food Kitchen'. The kind of book that gave you interesting ideas for things to do with lentils and chick peas. The type of book where you can still smell the patchouli wafting through the pages. I dream of illustrating one of those books. One day. One day...."Well, I'm not done with the cliches. You know, if you work hard and really really dig what you do, it seems, you can make your dreams come true. Right, I'm not allowed to say anything more. For now.
This is an oldie, yes. But it's not on my blog, no. Until now.
I did post it, for about five minutes, about a year back, when I'd drawn it. But I couldn't bear looking at it. I don't why I disliked it so much back then. Well, apart from the composition - which I still feel is a bit contrived. I remember posting it and then deleting it later the same day.
Today, while I was looking through the Moleskine drawings that I'd saved to a pen drive, I came across it again. And, with a year or so between us I feel that maybe I was being a bit harsh back then. It's not too bad. It's not great. Not my best. But it ain't awful or owt.
So, especially as I have nothing else to post, I thought I'd give it another outing. Better owt than nowt. As they say up North.
I love that time when you are just about to fall asleep. That moment inbetween awake and asleep. It's such an creative space. For example, last night at that very moment, I just knew that I had to, that I really really must, add a woodgrain to the background of this ole drawing. Why? Who can say. I could analyse it, but I think it's best not to.
And, what can I say about my last post? Just that I am completley blown away by the response. I'm still speechless (not that you'd notice), and will be sure to keep you posted on the building of the AJ empire. Thank you, all, so very much.
A little note, too, about my mate (from the last post). He really is very supportive and has invested both his time and money into my business. He was, actually, secretly, very pleased with himself for whipping up such a response. Of course, he now believes he's saved my blog from going to rack and ruin.
One more thing, you can now follow A Heavy Soul on Twitter. That's me by the way. Andrea Joseph was already taken. The swines!
And another thing, I can't believe I've dug out this sketchbook again. You'd have thought I'd spent enough time on it. SEE.
Cheers, my dears.
As I see it (I haven't been following you for 5 years), this is just another example of how you've taken the common and made it Uncommon. I've enjoyed every post. This one is as good as the first.
!!!
A cliché is worn-out & meaningless... but a classic is something of lasting worth, it's timeless. Every artist has to develop & keep evolving their personal style - which you've done *quite* well! This earlier piece of yours is still a good piece - it's a classic :-)
I suspect you have a cookbook commission...?
Well, I think I can wait a bit to say "I was sure" :)
fabulous, love your work
Thank you, guys.
Caroline, you might be barking up the right tree!
I can reveal all, so to speak, soon.
Cheers.

Wow Andrea. I remember you posting this! I can't believe 5 years has gone by.
