2. The Toothless Tooth Fairy

Title: The Toothless Tooth Fairy

Author: Shanelle Hicks

Illustrator: Anca Delia Budeanu

Publisher/Year: Mirror Publishing/2014

Author Shanelle Hicks and illustrator Anca Delia Budeanu have created a dazzling fairy story, in their picture book The Toothless Tooth Fairy, that could easily rival any fairy book on the market today. Their book is filled with brilliant illustrations that depict seven lovely and ethnically diverse young tooth fairies who have come together to take part in the Miss Tooth Fairy Smile Contest. For fairies who place much importance on teeth, a smile contest certainly seems fitting.

One tooth fairy in particular, Bella, was known for her beauty and her kindness. All of the other fairies thought for sure that she would win. But one jealous fairy, Zelda, maliciously causes Bella to lose a tooth. With a missing tooth, Bella no longer feels beautiful, so she sets off to find a tooth. Her three attempts to borrow a child’s tooth fail and Bella returns to Cloud Nine defeated and depressed where she meets Zelda who brags about what she’s done and how she will win the contest. But instead of being angry or being upset that she won’t win the contest, Bella feels sad for Zelda and because she is a kind fairy, gives Zelda a hug. Her magical hug transforms Zelda’s heart and she becomes beautiful too, on the inside and the outside.

What I like best about The Toothless Tooth Fairy is the message that true beauty comes from a kind heart. The message is not preached, but rather it is woven into a sweet and entertaining story that kids (especially young girls) will enjoy.

4. Fairy May by Jo Linsdell and Promoting Your Book

Today, I'm part of Jo Linsdell's virtual book tour for her new children's book Fairy May. And, she has helpful guest post for us on book marketing.

Building a platform and promoting a book

Guest Post by Jo Linsdell

We all know that having a platform is important. Having a recognised author brand with thousands of blog readers and social media followers is fantastic but it's not enough. You need to make it easy for people to buy your book too.

Even the most famous of authors do 'launches' for their new releases. I'm not saying that working on building your platform is wrong. Far from it. Building a strong author platform is very important. It gives you an audience and establishes you as an expert in your field. You need to put your latest release in front of people though if you want them to buy it.

Ways you can promote your book:

•    A virtual book tour. This is where you organise to be hosted on blogs and for social media chats, radio interviews etc... over a set period of time. A virtual book tour can include anything from interviews, guest posts, book spotlights and reviews to Facebook wall chats, live twitter interviews and more.
•    Do a give away. Offer a free give away to anyone who buys a copy of your book within a set time frame and promote it via social media. An example could be a short ebook.
•    Create a contest. This can be done via Goodreads or social media sites like Facebook. For a chance to win a valuable prize, people need to buy a copy of your book.
•    Place ads for targeted promotion. This can be done by using targeted advertising on Facebook or by placing a banner on a website that reaches your target audience.
•    Reach out to book clubs. Get your book on the reading list and offer a chance to chat either by visiting the group in person by via Skype.
•    Do a book signing. This can be an in person event at a bookstore or other location or online using a site like Author Graph.

What are some of the platform or promotional activities you've done?

Now on to Fairy May.

Fairy May dreams of one day becoming a tooth fairy but she struggles at school and always seems to get things wrong. With hard work and determination she prepares for her test. Will she realise her dream and become a tooth fairy?

Pillow Talk

By Ruth Hartman

Trixie Trident has a secret. Everyone knows she creates one-of-a-kind jewelry during the day. It's what she does on her night job no one would ever guess. She's a tooth fairy. Not the tooth fairy, just one of many. It would take her whole life just to combat the many misconceptions people have about TF's. Like how nobody wears tutus or uses a wand. Or stands three inches high. Nope, Trixie looks just like any other woman in her mid-twenties. And she'd tell people all of that stuff. If she was allowed to. But she'd sworn a sacred tooth fairy oath that she'd never tell a soul. And she hadn't. Except for her best friend, who would never breathe a word to anyone.

Graham Keebler meets Trixie when she comes to his dental office as a new patient. He's had lots of single women patients before, but no one has ever sparked his interest like Trixie. What is it about her that's so unique? He can't quite figure it out, but he's determined to try, even when she turns him down for a second date.

Trixie is attracted to Graham, like she's never been to any man before. He's what she always dreamed of in a man. And they even have the subject of teeth in common! But a relationship with the gorgeous dentist can never be. How could it? When she's a tooth fairy, and not only can't she tell him, he'd never believe her anyway.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Class Act Books (August 2010)

8. Ten Things That You Don’t Want From The Tooth Fairy

Image via Wikipedia

You just lost a tooth. Time to put your tooth under the pillow and be rewarded by the Tooth Fairy. Here are ten things that you should not want to get from the Tooth Fairy:

  1. You do not want to get an IOU. Come on Tooth Fairy, deliver the goods.
  2. You do not want to get a ham sandwich under your pillow. You are not amused.
  3.  You do not want to get a rock. Times are tough, but you can do better than that.
  4. You do not want to get free tickets to a Barney and Friends concert. You’re too old and it would be too embarrassing to go.
  5. You do not want to get a card for your next dental appointment. This is ridiculous.
  6. You do not want to get five cents. This is your tooth. Don’t be so cheap.
  7. You do not want to get a water balloon. Just what you need, a wet bed and a soggy tooth.
  8. You do not want to get a homework assignment. This is cruel. The Tooth Fairy is not suppose to be cruel.
  9. You do not want to get a letter from the IRS saying that they are going to audit your Tooth Fairy money.
  10. You do not want to get a tube of toothpaste. Listen Tooth Fairy, you want tens and twenties please.

10. Tooth Fairy Dilemma

So what is a parent to do when she catches her kid in a lie when it was the parent who lied in the first place? This is not a made up story, my kid really did try to pull the wool over the tooth fairy’s eyes (aka, MY eyes!).

The afternoon began with a trip to the dentist for my daughter. She had a new tooth coming in, but the baby tooth didn’t want to abandon her mouth. So I had to take her in to get it pulled. They put it in a little envelope for her to take home so she could put it out for the tooth fairy (ya, I know, she’s 9, but she still believes). So off we go home.

I make her soup for supper, because that’s all she wants to eat after the dentist. As she’s eating, she bites down on the spoon and another tooth pops out. Two teeth in one day? That’s a first for us! So I told her she’ll probably get more money from the tooth fairy, because I don’t think that happens too often.

At bedtime, I remind her to put her teeth in the special little pillow we put out. She pulls the one out of the envelope from the dentist and sees it was one that had a colored filling in it. Well. She wanted to keep it because it looked neat. I said no. She was not happy, but proceeded to put it with the other one.

Later that night, I proceed to do my tooth fairy duties, but soon discover there is only one tooth in the pillow. Hmmmm. Well, I figure only one tooth, only one tooth’s amount of money. When she was at school that day, I found where she hid the other tooth. Now the question is do I confront her and blow the tooth fairy story?

Later that evening I asked her if the tooth fairy came. She said yes, so I asked here if she got $4 (instead of the usual $2). She nodded and said mhmmm and took off to her room. Busted! But what do I say? After all, I started the lie saying there is a tooth fairy.

(By the way, the kid in the picture isn’t mine!)

12. New Chapter Book

I am happy to announce that with this new year, I have a new book out! This is my first chapter book, and I must say, it was a blast to write. Pearl vs. the Tooth Fairy started off as a picture book which morphed into a hybrid picture book/graphic novel, which morphed into an easy reader. Then when Scholastic Book Clubs decided to take it on, it became a chapter book. I worked with the most wonderful editor, Jenne Abramowitz, who guided me through shaping this story into a quick-paced, fun read. It's leveled at 2.0, but first graders will find its reading level appropriate for them as well.

The premise of the story is a girl, Pearl Ruby, loses her first tooth. Being the collector that she is, Pearl decides to keep it and start a tooth collection. Well you can imagine what the Tooth Fairy feels about this decision!

The illustrations by Lynne Avril are adorable and, like fairy dust, are sprinkled throughout the chapters rather than just at the beginning of chapters. One mom told me her daughter who likes to read "big kid" chapter books also asks when the next picture will be, so this book satisfies readers who want both.

Pearl vs. the Tooth Fairy is only available through Scholastic Book Clubs. I was told it is listed in the Seesaw newsletter on page 3 for $3.00. So if your school partakes in this book club, be sure to include Pearl on your order form. Thank you!
