If December was a rough month for comics, January gives us glimpses of several titles that haven’t been on the chart for quite some time. Titles like Purgatori from Dynamite Entertainment, Borderlands Fall of Fyrestone from IDW, and Zero from Image made reappearances that let us know how these series were doing.
This month 142 independent titles hit the top 300 list, which is up from last month’s total of 133. Even with the addition of nine titles to the list, sales were down 7.6% compared to last month’s 1,506,427. That brings the average number of comics sold to 9,867, which is also down from last month. There’s plenty of room for these numbers to grow in the year 2015.
In terms of individual publishers, Image leads with a 9.21% market share and a 8.91% unit market share. IDW comes in next with a 5.78% market share and a 4.52% unit market share, while Dark Horse is trails behind with a 4.01% market share and a 3.03% unit market share. Boom! Studios and Dynamite Entertainment compete fiercely; Boom! with a 2.26% market share and a 2.28% unit market share and Dynamite Entertainment with a 2.41% market share and a 2.22% market share.
UK and European Sales from Diamond UK are not represented in this chart.

These numbers are a cautionary tale of what can happen when a comic doesn’t keep to a stable publishing schedule – the comic lost nearly 50k readers from start to finish. Still, I quite enjoyed this title, which makes these numbers that much more heartbreaking.

Looks like steady attrition has taken it’s toll.
Looks like the image glory days have already passed. Image probably launched way too much new titles every month (6?). Almost all of them crash and burn, losing more than 3/4 of their debut sales. And with the 9.99$ first paperback, it’s easier to wait for the first trade to know exactly what a new itile is about.
Put Hellboy back with the BPRD and look what happens. Hard to avoid comparing that with where the ongoing series have gone over the last couple of years.

That’s a bit of an overstatement, considering their ever-increasing marketshare month to month.
I do agree that perhaps they’re releasing a few too many new series, however. They need to give these comics a chance to breath before moving on to the next big thing. Maybe retailers and speculators are demanding a high amount of Image #1s but it’s getting a bit tough on the reader to keep up. I get a lot of comics but it’s true that I’ve begun trade-waiting a lot more of the Image stuff than I used to.
Even following these stories on a monthly basis gets overwhelming; there’s usually quite a lot of characters, ideas and plot points in every new Image series. They need a little more breathing room if they want to sustain sales levels, in my opinion.
As Evan already mentioned, there are formatting issues. Some entries for #1 issues have publisher and cover price information right next to the title, which pushes the numbers off of the page. Also, there are two entries for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic at #119 and #144. I believe that #144 should be its companion series, My Little Pony: Friends Forever.
As for Supreme: Blue Rose, March’s #7 issue was the last one, so unfortunately we won’t have next few issues to look at trends.
While it’s true that Ten Grand suffered from delays, I think the major reason for its sales decline was the drastic change in art style from Ben Templesmith to CP Smith. It’s ironic when you consider that JMS’ reason for replacing Templesmith was “When we reignited the Joe’s Comics imprint, we took a blood oath that our books would come out on time, no matter what.” I wonder what’s going on with Joe’s Comics imprint, since its other titles are also pretty bad in terms of delays.
“Even following these stories on a monthly basis gets overwhelming; there’s usually quite a lot of characters, ideas and plot points in every new Image series. They need a little more breathing room if they want to sustain sales levels, in my opinion.”
The complaint here is that there is too much in an Image series? No wonder I’m buying more Image and less Big Two recently.
Is there a way to fix the formatting? I can hardly see any of the percentage changes.
