1. Why I’m a Member of the CWCC

Read Why Terri Forehand Enjoys Membership in the Children’s Writers’ Coaching Club!

Terri Forehand
from Terri Forehand

I can’t really say enough about The Children’s Writers’ Coaching Club and Suzanne Lieurance’s mentoring. I gained so much knowledge from her bootcamp and then I have continued to stay in the club for the constant support and encouragement it offers. I have obtained paid writing assignments from publishers like Mometrix Media and Kaplan as a direct result of the information and skills that I have learned from being a club member. I continue to get repeat assignments from these publishers on an ongoing basis including writing health exam questions for National Certifications in Nursing. It is so rewarding to get paid for what I love to do, write.

The Children’s Writers’ Coaching Club also teaches the skills needed for creating a blog, writing a marketing plan on a weekly basis, and learning critique and editing skills. Sharing my marketing plan with the club members makes me accountable for my writing career and encourages me to work harder and write more. I can’t thank Suzanne enough and the others for the positive feedback I get and for being honest when I need to seriously revise some of my work. The weekly critiques help get my writing focused and makes the material more polished for submission to appropriate publishers.

Because of being a club member, I now have two manuscripts for children ready for submission. I am working on a third story for children and have started to introduce my main character on my blogs. These blogs would not be possible if I had not gained this information from bootcamp and being a club member. I have a blog for new writers at http://terri-forehand.blogspot.com and a blog for parents and children who are dealing with serious health issues including terminal illness at http://heartfeltwords4kids.blogspot.com.  I even have two websites I am working on and a mailing list of followers, all a result of what I have learned at The Children’s Writers’ Coaching Club.

Anyone who wants to write for children would benefit from becoming a club member. We learn, we write, we support each other, and most of all we have fun doing what we love thanks to being an active club member. I encourage all of your readers to join us as soon as possible to gain everything the club has to offer. It has been a huge impact on my writing career and has opened so many exciting doors to publishing.

3. The Premio Dartos or Darts Prise

Vivian Zabel honored me with the Prémio Dardos - or Darts Prize. Thank you, Vivian.

The Prémio Dardos is given for recognition of cultural, ethical, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing affection and gratitude for work that adds value to the Web.

From what I can gather, the origin of the Prémio Dardos began in Portugal or Brazil and this is the closest rendition of the original intent available:

1) Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that has granted the award and a link to his/her blog.

2) Pass the award to another 15 blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgment, remembering to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been selected for this award. So, I am passing the torch to:

4. New Online Resource Available for Parents and Families Coping with Terminally Ill Children

Children shouldn’t die. But in reality, children suffer from traumatic deaths and terminal illnesses. New website and blog helps parents of children with terminal illness.

Wheatfield, In, July 19, 2008. The topic of death and dying and children is a difficult topic to think about or discuss, yet parents and families with a terminally ill child need someone to turn to address these difficult issues. Now critical care pediatric nurse, Terri Forehand has created an online site called Heart Felt Words 4 Kids that not only provides a wealth of helpful resources for families coping with the stress, pain, and frustration of a terminally ill child, but also offers insight and guidance for discussing death and dying with children.

“I find when working with children with a terminal illness, that parents do not have enough resources to deal with the emotional side of the situation. We are good at giving them the medical and technical information, but we as a healthcare team, are not good at telling them it is ok to stop treatment. We are not good at saying “We have done everything we can, now go and love your child and hold him and then let him go.” We are not good at failing and we look at death as failing instead of a natural part of life. So where do parents go for that kind of support? I try to give parents the resources and emotional support and an arena where it is okay to talk about death and dying issues especially with children,” states Forehand.

She gives resources and book reviews along with tips to ease the pain of grief for children. The new website is more kid friendly. Here children experiencing grief or illness can click on KIDS WORDS and THEN SOME to add a comment or suggestion for other kids. They can also write a question about an illness or death and dying to be answered by the author who is a pediatric critical care nurse.

Ms. Forehand continues to work in the pediatric intensive care unit of The University of Chicago Comer’s Children’s hospital where she cares for children in all stages of illness. She is currently working on fiction for children and a book titled Career Diary of a Nurse.
