3. Heroes Throw Down in the New Batman v Superman Trailer

Over the weekend, a new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was unveiled at Comic-Con International. The video embedded above offers glimpses of stars Henry Cavill as Superman (a.k.a. Clark Kent), Ben Affleck as Batman (a.k.a. Bruce Wayne), and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Diana Prince).

This movie, helmed by filmmaker Zack Snyder, will hit theaters on March 25, 2016. Click on this link to watch the teaser trailer.

Even though this adaptation hasn’t been released yet, the executives at DC Comics have been busy developing plans for future film projects. Deadline reports that Affleck intends to collaborate with Geoff Johns on a script for a stand-alone Batman movie. Once they complete this task, production will move forward with Affleck serving as the director and taking on the lead role. (via Rolling Stone)

4. And in further casting news, Chris Pine is probably playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman

chris pine

Variety just broke the news, and it looks as though the new Captain Kirk is about to suit up for a DC Comics based role.

According to their report, Chris Pine (Star Trek, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) has entered negotiations with Warner Bros to play Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster).

Trevor is the long-time love interest of the title character, played by Gal Gadot. His current iteration in the New 52 relaunched DC Universe posits him as Wonder Woman’s U.S. Government liaison and the head of A.R.G.U.S. where he was seen in titles like Team 7 and Justice League of America.

Originally, there were rumors that Scott Eastwood would be taking on the role, but the trade also addressed that issue, stating that Eastwood had to choose between testing for Trevor or taking a guaranteed supporting role in David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad. Obviously, he ended up taking the latter option, though what role he landed on is unknown.

It seems likely that Warner Bros scoring an actor of Pine’s profile means that he’ll be signing on for a multiple picture appearance, which will surely include the first part of Zack Snyder‘s Justice League, set to release in 2017 along with Wonder Woman.

Wonder WomanFilmmaker Patty Jenkins will serve as the director for the Wonder Woman film adaptation.

7. Entertainment Round-Up: Jennifer Lawrence is calling it quits with the X-Men, Gal Gadot speaks out,and a Spider-Man audition rumor

X-Men-Mystique-Movie

It’s the start of another week, here’s your collection of headlines that are making some waves today:

– There was never any doubt that Jennifer Lawrence‘s future with the X-Men franchise was on borrowed time; she’s one of the world’s biggest movie stars in a part that thus far has been pretty thankless. The same could probably be said for Michael Fassbender and some of her other cast-mates, many of whom also see their contracts with Fox end after X-Men: Apocalypse. But it’s Lawrence who has made it clear that this third outing will be her last when speaking with MTV News.

Given that the attention of the franchise is shifting away from the core four of X-Men: First Class (Mystique, Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Beast) and onto the recently cast Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Nightcrawler, Apocalypse looks to be a fairly graceful close out for the previous era.

Gal Gadot, upon being cast as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, received a ton of unfair (and in some cases, disgusting) criticism from some segments of the online community related to her body type and physical attributes. In a recent interview translated by RobotUnderdog, Gadot addressed some of this discussion:

They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small. [Laughs] I’m really lucky nothing in my life was instantaneous. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amused me. The true Amazons had one boob so it won’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real Amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t.

She also went on to describe her excitement in playing the first big screen portrayal of Diana:

Playing Wonder Women is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can’t describe to you how much I wanted to play this character without even knowing I wanted to play her. I met a lot of people from the industry in LA for meetings. They always asked me ‘what’s your dream role?’, and I never could define it. I always answered that I wanted to play a women that is strong and will be a source for women empowerment. I don’t want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don’t like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a massage I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations. Yes, I get to play the strongest most empowering woman ever – Wonder Woman. I’m so grateful and I thank god every day. I want to devour it and enjoy every bite. She has unbelievable endurance. She is exceptionally strong. she can jump really high and practically fly. She know tons of martial arts styles. She is a strong and serious Woman.

– Toss this last one into the rumor pile for now, but Badass Digest is reporting that Marvel secretly auditioned 16 year old Weeds‘ actor Mateus Ward for the role of Peter Parker. If true, it means Marvel is indeed going very young for the role and are clearly trying to recast Peter Parker rather than aiming for Miles Morales as some might have hoped. With shooting for Captain America: Civil War only about a week away, if Spider-Man is going to make some kind of appearance be it a cameo or something more substantial, they’ll need to get this role squared away fairly quickly.

8. Entertainment Round-Up: Wonder Woman, Daredevil, Officer Downe, Supergirl, and a few Oscar predictions

gal-godot-2

It’s Oscar Eve! I’ll toss out a few Oscar Predictions towards the bottom of today’s round-up, but let’s get to what’s making headlines today in the world of comics-based entertainment.

– In a piece about a possible future Gal Gadot project, Deadline has reported that the actress will begin filming Wonder Woman in the fall. If that’s indeed the case, the never quite made official release date of June 23rd, 2017 sounds pretty likely to be met for the Michelle MacLaren production.

– The official Daredevil Netflix series twitter feed teased out the following photo yesterday:

The indication being that Daredevil’s father Jack Murdock fought The Absorbing Man at some point in the series’ history. Though, depending on the age that Creel is portrayed as, this could present a bit of a continuity issue since Creel appeared as an adversary of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. team during the first few episodes of this current season. Perhaps his power keeps him from aging?

Sons of Anarchy star Kim Coates has been cast as the lead in the upcoming feature film adaptation of Officer Downe, based on the Image comic by Joe Casey and Chris Burnham. Officer Downe will mark the directorial debut of Shawn Crahan aka Clown, co-founder of the metal act Slipknot, while Casey is penning the script.

– And finally, Supergirl now has a matriarchal figure for Melissa Benoist‘s Kara, as Nashville‘s Laura Benanti has signed on to play Alura Zor-El. Alura will be a recurring role in the series, offering her daughter guidance that echoes through space and time.

While Torsten will have a much better and comprehensive write-up on The Beat shortly, for whatever it’s worth, here are my Oscar predictions for tomorrow night in the major categories.:

Best Picture: Birdman

Best Director: Richard Linklater, Boyhood

Best Actor: Michael Keaton, Birdman

Best Actress: Julianne Moore, Still Alice

Best Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons, Whiplash

Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette, Boyhood

Best Original Screenplay: Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness, The Grand Budapest Hotel

Best Adapted Screenplay: Damien Chazelle, Whiplash (no guts, no glory over here!)

Best Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki, Birdman

Best Editing: Sandra Adair, Boyhood

10. Michelle Maclaren to direct ‘Wonder Woman’

wonderoman Michelle Maclaren to direct Wonder Woman

Great Hera! Variety has reported that Michelle Maclaren will direct Warner Bros’ “Wonder Woman” standalone motion picture. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the film aside from the fact that Gal Gadot will star as Princess Diana of Themyscira, and Charles Roven is a producer.

Maclaren is known for her work on AMC’s “The Walking Dead”, the Emmy award winning series “Breaking Bad”, and HBO’s “Game of Thrones”. Looks like Maclaren has over 20 years experience in Hollywood, so this feels like a really, really choice.

Here’s a video of Maclaren at work on the “Breaking Bad” set (FYI, spoiler alert):

“Wonder Woman” is set to hit theaters some time in 2017.

11. Sweet News in Diversity

Happy Halloween everyone! We’ve got something even better than treats today: great news in diversity!

Appltim cooke CEO Tim Cook recently came out in an editorial published by Bloomberg Businessweek, saying that he is “proud to be gay,” and making him the first openly gay leader of a major U.S. company. This was the first time Cook addressed his orientation publicly, saying, “I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others,” Cook wrote. “So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.” With more states and people accepting gay marriage and supporting LGBTQ rights, Cook’s move is inspirational and will hopefully lead to more acceptance within the workplace.

Marvel announces next phase of superhero movies

From left: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), and Chris Evans (Captain America) at a Marvel event in Hollywood

Marvel just recently announced their next phase of superhero movies and we’re excited to see that it’s going to include a Black Panther movie! The Black Panther (T’Challa) was the first black superhero in American comics. We’re also looking forward to seeing Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman! DC announced that Momoa would be playing Aquaman in the highly anticipated “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and the Wonder Woman movie will premier in 2017.
